My Early Religious Upbringing

I was brought up in the modern world of all the luxury and the high life of show business. I was born in a Christian home. I was given this religion (Christianity) and thought this way. I was taught that God exists, but there was no direct contact with God, so we had to make contact with Him through Jesus. This was more or less accepted by me.

My Beginning as a Pop Star

Gradually I became escape away from this religious upbringing. I started making music. I wanted to be a big star. All those things I saw in the films and on the media took hold of me, and perhaps I thought this was my God, the goal of making money. The people around me influenced me to think that this was it; this world was their God. I decided then that this was the life for me; to make a lot of money, have a ‘great life.’ I started making songs, but deep down I had a feeling for humanity, a feeling that if I became rich I would help the needy. (It says in the Quran, we make a promise, but when we make something, we want to hold onto it and become greedy.)

I became very famous. I was still a teenager; my name and photo were splashed in all the media. They made me larger than life, so I wanted to live larger than life, and the only way to do that was to be intoxicated with liquor and drugs.

In Hospital

After a year of financial success and ‘high’ living, I became very ill, contracted TB and had to be hospitalized. It was then that I started to think: What was to happen to me? Was I just a body, and my goal in life was merely to satisfy this body? I realized now that this calamity was a blessing given to me by God, a chance to open my eyes “Why am I here? Why am I in bed?” and I started looking for some of the answers.

At that time, there was great interest in the Eastern mysticism. I began reading, and the first thing I began to become aware of was death, and that the soul moves on; it does not stop. I felt I was taking the road to bliss and high accomplishment. What I believed in particular was that I was not just a body. This awareness came to me at the hospital.

One day when I was walking, and I was caught in the rain, I began running to the shelter and then I realized, ‘Wait a minute, my body is getting wet, my body is telling me I am getting wet.’ Then I realized I had a will, a God-given gift:follow the will of God. I was fascinated by the new terminology I was learning in the Eastern religion. By now, I was fed up with Christianity. I started making music again, and this time I started reflecting my own thoughts. I remember the lyric of one of my songs. It goes like this: “I wish I knew, I wish I knew what makes the Heaven, what makes the Hell. Do I get to know you in my bed or some dusty cell while others reach the big hotel?” and I knew I was on the Path.

I also wrote another song, “The Way to Find God Out.” I became even more famous in the world of music. I really had a difficult time because I was getting rich and famous, and at the same time, I was sincerely searching for the Truth. Then I came to a stage where I decided that Buddhism is all right and noble, but I was not ready to leave the world. I was not prepared to isolate myself from society.

I tried Zen and Ching, numerology, tarot cards and astrology. I tried to look back into the Bible and could not find anything. At this time I did not know anything about Islam, and then, what I regarded as a miracle occurred. My brother had visited the mosque in Jerusalem and was greatly impressed that while on the one hand it throbbed with life. On the other hand, an atmosphere of peace and tranquility prevailed.

My beginning with The Quran

When he came to London, he brought back a translation of the Quran, which he gave to me. He did not become a Muslim, but he felt something in this religion, and thought I might find something in it also.

And when I received the book, A guidance that would explain everything to me, who I was; what was the purpose of life; what was the reality and what would be the reality; and where I came from, I realized that this was the true religion; religion not in the sense the West understands it, not the type for only your old age. I was at first confused between the body and the soul. Then I realized that the body and soul are not apart and you don’t have to go to the mountain to be religious. We must follow the will of God. Then we can rise higher than the angels. The first thing I wanted to do now was to be a Muslim.

I realized that everything belongs to God. He created everything. At this point I began to lose the pride in me, because hereto I had thought the reason I was here was because of my own greatness. But I realized that I did not create myself, and the whole purpose of my being here was to submit to the teaching that has been perfected by the religion we know as Al-Islam. At this point, I started discovering my faith. I felt I was a Muslim.

On reading the Quran, I now realized that all the Prophets sent by God brought the same message. Why then were the Jews and Christians different? I know now how the Jews did not accept Jesus as the Messiah and that they had changed His Word. Even the Christians misunderstand God’s Word and called Jesus the son of God. Everything made so much sense. This is the beauty of the Quran; it asks you to reflect and reason, and not to worship the sun or moon but the One Who has created everything. The Quran asks man to reflect upon the sun and moon and God’s creation in general. Do you realize how different the sun is from the moon? They are at varying distances from the earth, yet appear the same size to us; at times, one seems to overlap the other.

When I read the Quran further, it talked about prayer, kindness and charity. I was not a Muslim yet, but I felt that the only answer for me was the Quran, and God had sent it to me, and I kept it a secret. But the Quran also speaks on different levels. I began to understand it on another level, where the Quran says, “Those who believe do not take disbelievers for friends and the believers are brothers.” Thus at this point I wished to meet my Muslim brothers.

Convert to Islam

Then I decided to journey to Jerusalem (as my brother had done). At Jerusalem, I went to the mosque and sat down. A man asked me what I wanted.. I told him I was a Muslim. He asked what my name was. I told him, “Stevens.” He was confused. I then joined the prayer, though not so successfully. Back in London, I met a sister called Nafisa. I told her I wanted to embrace Islam, and she directed me to the New Regent Mosque. This was in 1977, about one and a half years after I received the Quran. Now I realized that I must get rid of my pride, get rid of Satan, and face one direction. So on a Friday, after the Friday pray, I went to the Imam (Prayer Leader) and declared my faith (the Shahaadah: "I bear witness that there its no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Prophet."

Now I realize that I get in direct contact with God, unlike Christianity or any other religion. As one Hindu lady told me that in order to reach God, one has to create associates that are idols for the purpose. But Islam removes all these barriers. The only thing that moves the believers from the disbelievers is the salat (prayer). This is the process of purification.

Finally, I would like to stress that I did not come into contact with any Muslim before I embraced Islam. I read the Quran first and realized that no person is perfect. Islam is perfect, and if we imitate the conduct of the Prophet we will be successful..

"All I have to say is all what you know already, to confirm what you already know, the message of the Prophet [may God praise him] as given by God - the Religion of Truth. As human beings we are given a consciousness and a duty that has placed us at the top of creation… It is important to realize the obligation to rid ourselves of all illusions and to make our lives a preparation for the next life. Anybody who misses this chance is not likely to be given another, to be brought back again and again, because it says in the Glorious Quran that when man is brought to account, he will say, “O Lord, send us back and give us another chance. The Lord will say, ‘If I send you back you will do the same.”"

Two women who stood up to Pharaoh

“And Allah has set forth an example for those who believe: the wife of Fir’awn, when she said: ‘My Lord! Build for me a home with You in Paradise, and save me from Fir’awn and his work, and save me from the wrong-doers.’” (Qur’an, 66:11)

Qatadah said while explaining the verse: “Fir’awn (Pharaoh) was the most tyrannical and hardened disbeliever on Earth, and by Allah, his disbelief did not affect his wife when she decided to obey her Lord.”

Abu ‘Uthman An-Nahdi reported that Sulayman said: “Fir’awn’s wife was tortured in the heat of the sun. When her torturers would take a break and walk away, the angels would shade her with their wings, and she would see her home in Paradise.”

Al-Qasim Bin Abi Bazzah said: “Fir’awn’s wife asked who won, and it was said to her: ‘Musa and Harun won.’ So, she would say: ‘I believe in the Lord of Musa and Harun.’ Fir’awn said to those around him: ‘Look for the largest rock you can find. If she sticks to what she said, throw it on her. If she retracts what she said, she will remain my wife.’ When they came to her, she looked towards the sky and saw her home in Paradise. So, she stuck to what she said and her soul was taken, and the rock was thrown on her lifeless body after her soul had been taken.’ “

The scholars say regarding her statement: “My Lord! Build for me a home with You in Paradise” that she chose her neighbor (Allah) before mentioning where she wanted to live (a home in Paradise).

Abu Al-Aliyah said that Fir’awn’s wife turned to believer because of the wife of Fir’awn’s treasurer. What happened was that this woman was sitting and combing the hair of Fir’awn’s daughter one day, and the comb fell from her hand. So, she said: “May whoever disbelieves in Allah be destroyed!” Fir’awn’s daughter said to her: “You have a lord besides my father?” She replied: “The Lord of me, your father, and everything is Allah.” So, Fir’awn’s daughter hit her and went to tell her father.

Fir’awn sent for her, saying: “You worship a lord besides me?” She said: “Yes. Your Lord, mine, and of everything is Allah, and I worship Him.” So, Fir’awn tortured her by putting her on a stake and stretching out her arms and legs and setting loose snakes on her body. One day, when she was in such a state, he came to her and said: “Will you give up?” She replied: “Your Lord, mine and of everything is Allah.” He said to her: “I will kill your son if you do not do not retract what you said.” She said: “Do whatever you want,” and he killed her son, and she could hear his soul calm her down by saying to her: “Be happy, my mother! You have such and such reward with Allah!”

She remained patient until Fir’awn came to her another day, and she said the same to him as she had before. So, he killed another of her sons, and she could hear his soul calming her down as well.

Fir’awn’s wife heard all this, and this caused her to become a believer. Allah took away the soul of the wife of Fir’awn’s treasurer, and Fir’awn’s wife suddenly realized the reward, status, and honor that this woman had in Paradise.

So, she increased in her faith and certitude until Allah caused Fir’awn to discover her faith, and he said to his followers: “What do you know about Asyah Bint Muzahim?” They replied by praising her, and he said to them: “She worships someone besides me!” They said: “Kill her,” and he placed her on a device that stretched her arms and legs away from her body. So, Asyah called upon her Lord, saying: “My Lord! Build for me a home with You in Paradise!” Fir’awn happened to walk by when she said this, and she smiled because she saw her home in Paradise, and Fir’awn said to those watching: “Aren’t you amazed at her insanity? She smiles while we are torturing her?!”

So, Allah took her soul away to Paradise, and may Allah be pleased with her.

Humbleness of Umar Bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)

AS was his custom, Umar Bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), the Leader of the Believers, once went out at night to look after the needs of the people and to make sure that everyone was safe. As he passed by an open area in Madina, he heard the moans of a woman coming out from a small and shabby house, at the door of which was a man seated.

Umar greeted him and asked him how he was. The man said that he was from the desert and had come seeking to reap some generosity from the Leader of the Believers.

Umar asked him about the woman and the moaning noises, and the man, not knowing that he was speaking to the Leader of the Believers, said, “Go away, may Allah have mercy on you, and do not ask about what does not concern you.”

However, Umar persisted in asking the same question, offering to help if he could. And so the man informed him, “Indeed she is my wife, who is about to give birth, yet there is no one here to help her.” Umar left the man, returned to his house in a hurry, entered, and said to his wife, Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), “Will you take reward that Allah has brought to you?” She said, “And what is that goodness and reward, O Umar?”

As soon as he informed her, she stood and took all that she needed to help the woman deliver her baby and all that the newborn would need as well. Meanwhile, the Leader of the Believers took a pot and with it some (food) and grains.

He and his wife hurried off together until they reached the shabby house. While Umm Kulthum went in to help the pregnant woman, Umar remained outside with the husband, and cooked the food he brought with him.

From inside the house, Umm Kulthum called out, “O Leader of the Believers, give glad tidings to your companion that Allah has provided him with a young boy.”

The man was amazed to hear that it was the Leader of the Believers who was seated with him cooking the food; and the man’s wife inside was shocked to learn that it was the wife of the Caliph who came to meet her and help her in her shabby house.

Hadhrat Abu Uthman (Radhiyallaho anho) says: "I was once sitting under a tree with Hadhrat Salmaan (Radhiyallaho anho). He caught hold of a dry branch of the tree and shook it till all its leaves fell off. He then said to me, "0, Abu Uthman! (Radhiyallaho anho) Will you not ask me why I am doing this?" "Do tell me," I entreated. He said, "The Apostle (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam) of Allah had done exactly like this before me, while I was with him under a tree.

He caught a dry branch of it and shook it, till all its leaves fell off". At this he said: O, Salmaan! (Radhiyallaho anho) will you not ask me why I am doing this?' I replied: 'Do tell me why you are doing this?' He remarked: "Verily when a Muslim takes wudhu properly and then observes his salaat five times a day, his sins fall off just as these leaves have fallen off. He then recited the following verse of the Holy Qur'an:

"Establish salaat at the two ends of the day, and at the approaches of the night. Verily, good deeds annul ill deeds. This is a reminder for the mindful. (XI: 114)"

The behaviour of Hadhrat Salmaan (Radhiyallaho anho) in the above Hadith displays the profound love which the Sahaabah had for the Prophet (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam). They would often cherish the sweet memories of the time when the Prophet (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) was living among them. They would, while quoting him, enact exactly what they had seen him doing at a particular moment.

It is really very difficult to cover all the traditions of the Holy Prophet (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam), which deal with the importance of salaat and which declare forgiveness for those who guard it. As had already been said before, the theologians restrict this declaration of forgiveness to saghaa'ir (minor sins) only, but in the text of the Hadith there is no such restriction.

My learned father gave me two reasons for this. Firstly, it does not really become a Muslim to commit any of the kabaa'ir (major sins). If perchance any such sins are committed by him, he cannot rest in peace (due to inherent fear of Allah in him) until he washes them with his tears of repentance in crying before Allah. Secondly, the person who performs his salaat with sincerity and thoroughness is very likely to do istighfaar quite a number of times daily. Look for instance at the closing prayer of salaat itself:

"O, My Lord! I have wronged my soul a great wrong, and none forgiveth sins save Thou alone. Then forgive me and have mercy on me. Verily, Thou are the Forgiving, the Merciful.

In the above Hadith, mention is made of wudhu to be done properly. We should, therefore, be sure of the regulations about wudhu and try to observe all of these. For example, take the case of miswaak. It is sunnat of wudhu, but is very often neglected. It is said in a Hadith that the salaat offered after doing miswaak is seventy times superior to the salaat without miswaak. In another Hadith, use of miswaak has been enjoined very strongly, and the following benefits are attributed to it

"It cleanses and sweetens the mouth and checks its bad smell."

"It is a cause of Allah's pleasure and a blow to the Devil."

"Allah and his angels love the person doing miswaak." "It strengthens the gums and improves eye-sight."

"It is a purge against bile and phlegm."

To crown all, "It is a sunnah i.e. the practice of our beloved Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam)."

As many as seventy virtues of the miswaak have been enumerated by the theologians. It is said that a person in the habit of miswaak dies with the Kalimah on his lips. The rewards of taking wudhu properly are very many. It is mentioned in Ahaadith that the parts of body washed in wudhu shall glitter on the Day of Judgment and, by this (distinction), the Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) will at once recognize his followers.

1. Unnecessary Talking

Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "A person who talks too much is a person who often makes mistakes, and someone who often makes mistakes, often has wrong actions. The Fire has a priority over such a frequent sinner."
2. Unrestrained Glances

It has been related that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallum once said words to the effect: "The glance is a poisoned arrow of shaytan. Whoever lowers his gaze for Allah, He will bestow upon him a refreshing sweetness which he will find in his heart on the day that he meets Him."
3. Too Much Food

Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'd Yakrib said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "The son of Adam fills no vessel more displeasing to Allah than his stomach. A few morsels should be enough for him to preserve his strength. If he must fill it, then he should allow a third for his food, a third for his drink and leave a third empty for easy breathing."
4. Keeping Bad Company

Allah's Apostle said: "The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is I like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellows (or furnace); from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof."

Easy but few people practice

Abdullah Bin Amr Bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “There are two characteristics that whenever the Muslim maintains them will enter Jannah. These two traits are easy to possess. However, only a few people acquire them.

“Say Subhan Allah 10 times, Alhamduillah 10 times and Allahu Akbar 10 times at the end of each Salah. By practicing this deed you earn 150 rewards for your tongue and 1,500 for the scale (of good deeds).

“And before you go to sleep say Subhan Allah 33 times, Alhamdulilah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times. By saying these words before you sleep you gain 100 good deeds for your tongue and 1,000 deeds for the scale.”

The companions (Allah be pleased with them) asked, “O Messenger (of Allah), how is that these deeds are easy, yet few people do them?”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “Right after a person finishes praying, Shaitan comes to him and reminds him of something that he has to do. Therefore this person gets up and leaves without saying these words.

“Further, when he lies down on his bed, Shaitan comes to him and causes him to fall asleep before he mentions these words.” Abdullah Bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say these words using his hand to count them.”(Abu Dawood, no. 5065, Al-Tirmidhi, no. 3410, An-Nisa’i, no. 926 and Ahmad, 2/205)

Thought you might enjoy this interesting Prayer given in Kansas at the opening session of their Senate. It seems Prayer still upsets some People. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:
Almighty Allah, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek your direction and Guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we Have done.
We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
We have rewarded laziness and called it Welfare.
We have killed our unborn and called it Choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it Justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our Children and called it building self esteem...
We have abused power and called it Politics.
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and Pornography and called it freedom of expression.
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amin!
The response was immediate. A number of Legislators walked out during the prayer in Protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Mosque where the Immam was serving logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The Mosque is now receiving International requests for copies of this prayer From India , Africa and Korea .
Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on His radio program, 'The Rest of the Story, ‘and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired..
With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our Desire so that we again can be called 'one nation Under God.'

A touchy reminder…

I woke up suddenly one night

and saw a strange light in my room ....

The problem is that the lights are off

I saw the clock, it was 3.30 in the morning

Okay...so where is all this light coming from??

I turned around and saw something very strange..

My body was half way through the wall (??!)

I immediately pulled it out and sat down to see if i'm okay

.....

This is strange...

I tried to push onto the wall, but MY ARM GOES THROUGH

...
I heard a sound

I turned to my brother's bed to see him sleeping

I was really scared of what was happening to me...so I tried to wake him up....but....he doesn't reply!!

I went to m y parent's bedroom..I tried to wake up my mother...and father...I just wanted somebody to react to me...

but nobody did.

I tried to wake my mother up again...she woke up this time...

she got up ... but didn't communicate to me

She was saying "In the name of Allah, most Merciful, most Gracious" (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) again and again...

She woke my dad up saying 'get up, man, I want to check up on the kids.'

My dad replied in disinterest .. 'it's not time for this, let me sleep and inshAllah tomorrow i'll get to that'

But she was insisting..so he woke up.

I was THERE. I was screaming..'dad', 'mum' ... nobody was replying

I held mother's clothes to grab her attention..but she didn't recognise my existence

I followed her 'till she got to my bedroom

They got into the room and turned on the lights...
it wasn't making any differenc e to me anyway because there was a strong light there.

I then saw the strangest thing in my life...

my OWN BODY....on my bed.

I was trembling...how can there be two of me??...how can that person look so much like me??...and what is he doing on my bed????

I started hitting/slapping myself to wake up from this nightmare...
but it was too real to be a nightmare.

dad said 'Yalla, see the kids are sleeping. Let's go back to bed.'

but mother wasn't at all confident...she went to the person sleeping in my bed and said

'Khalid, wake up!! ... WAKE UP!!'

but he wouldn't reply.

She tried again and again....but no reply.

Then i turned to see my dad tearing...
Today witnesses the first time in my life that I have seen my dad's tears.

The place was shaking with the screaming

... My brother woke up..."What's going on??!"

In a very sad tone, with tears rolling down her cheek, mother replied 'your brother's dead! Khalid is DEAD!!'

I went to mother and said 'please mum...don't cry..I'm right here look at me!'

But nobody's replying to me..WHY??

I turned to Allah and asked Him to wake me up from the nightmare!

quickly following my dua was a voice saying (Quran):

" You were in negligence from this, so We uncovered the blinds and today your sight is (like iron) "

لقد كنت في غفلة من هذا فكشفنا عنك غطاءك فبصرك اليوم حديد

Suddenly two creatures held my arm..they weren't human!!

"Leave me ALONE! Who are you and what do you want from me??"

'We're your grave's guards'

I said 'but I'm not dead yet! let go of me!!'

I can still see, hear, touch, and speak..I'm not dead!

They replied with a smile : "You humans are fascinating! You think that by dying your life ends, while in fact life on Earth is a small dream compared to the Here after; a dream that ends at your death."

They started pulling me towards my grave...

On the way I saw people just like me, each had two guards like mine.

Some were smiling, others crying, others screaming.

I asked the guards 'why are they all doing that?'

They replied 'These people now know their fate...some were in ignorance so they--'

'--so they go to Hell??!' I interrupted

They said 'yes.'

and continued..

'and those laughing are going to Heaven'

I quickly replied: 'What about me..where will I go??'

They said 'you were at times a good Muslim, while other times not. One day you obey Allah, the next you disobe y Him. And you weren't clear with yourself and your fate will remain so: lost.'

I replied, shaking: 'SO AM I GOING TO HELL??'

They said: ' Allah's mercy is great, and the journey is long '

I turned to see my family carrying my dead body in a coffin..so i ran to them ..

I said: 'make dua for me'

but nobody replied..

I went to my brother and warned him .. 'be careful with what you do in this life... don't be a fool like myself!'

I was really hoping that he could hear me...

The two angels (guards) tied up my soul on top of my body ..

I saw my relatives pouring sand over me ..

at that moment I was hoping that I would be in their place...

that I can turn to Allah and do as much as He wants from me...
that I would ask for forgiveness and once and for all repent my sins that angered Him...< BR>
but unfortunately I couldn't.

I shouted ' People, don't let this life tempt you! Wake up to the truth... one day you will DIE, and you never know when..or how. '

I hoped for somebody to hear me....nobody there did

but YOU heard me....

save yourself.

Smile to others, forgive them when you have the power to punish them. Allah forgives those that forgive others. Do your prayers regularly with an open heart. Let Allah guide your life, not Satan. Read the Quran regularly and let the Prophet (p.b.u.h) be your role model in life.

Work in this timed life for your salvation in an eternal one.

And ... make dua for me because I'm not perfect. And I point the above to myself just as much as I do to my friends.

The man behind the armor: Salah-ad-Din Al-Ayyubi

HE defied the odds in an era of darkness. He set aside the criticism of those who called him crazy for wanting to do the seemingly impossible: uniting the Ummah, standing up to the Crusaders, and returning honor where it belonged. He was respected by both his friends and foes, and is perhaps one of the few men whose name evokes feelings of honor and pride in the minds of so many people in every era and place.

He had the Crusaders chasing their tails in the battles of Alexandria, Hittin, Acre, Tyre, Beirut, Nablus, Haifa, Tiberius, Gaza, ‘Asqalan, Jerusalem, and dozens of other cities and towns across Sham and North Africa. He is popularly known as Salah-ad-Din the warrior.

But, who was the man behind the armor? How was he as a person, and as a Muslim? What personality does it take to carry out such heroic feats and achieve such a status?

In Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah (13/5-6), Ibn Kathir said that at the time of his death, Salah-ad-Din hardly had any money in his possession, and this was because:

“…of the immense amount of gifts and charity and kindness that he used to show the leaders and ministers under his command, and even to his enemies.

“He was very simple in his clothing, food, drink, and transportation. He would only wear cotton, linen, and wool. It is not known that he ever approached anything forbidden or discouraged, especially after Allah blessed him with his kingdom. Rather, his greatest concern and goal was to aid Islam.”

Ibn Kathir continued:

“He was very strict in praying on time in the jama’ah (congregation). It is said that he never missed a single prayer in jama’ah for a great part of his life, even during the illness that killed him. The imam would enter and lead him in prayer, and he would struggle to get up and pray despite his weakness.”

“He loved to hear the recitation of the Qur’an and the reading of hadith and knowledge. He was constant and habitual in listening to ahadith being read to him, to the point that he would hear a section read to him while he was standing between the ranks of soldiers!”

Ibn Kathir also mentioned: “He had a soft heart, and was easily swayed to tears when he would hear ahadith.

“And Salah-ad-Din was from the bravest of people, and the strongest of them in body and heart despite the illnesses and sickness his body suffered from. This was most evident during the Siege of Acre, where despite the massive numbers of the enemy, he only increased in power and bravery.”

He also said:

“He was generous, well-rounded, always laughing and smiling. He would never slack off in any good that he did. He was extremely patient when doing good and worshipping Allah.”

In ‘Siyar A’lam An-Nubala” (15/436), it’s mentioned that Al-Muwaffaq Abdul Latif said:

“I went to Salah-ad-Din while he was in Jerusalem, and I saw a king who filled eyes with amazement and hearts with love, whether they were near or far. The first night I spent with him, I found his gatherings filled with scholars engaged in knowledge. He would listen intently and participate in their discussions. He would learn how to build walls and dig trenches, and he would then do this himself, carrying the rocks on his own shoulders.”

Al-’Imad said in ‘As-Siyar’ (15/440):

“He would only wear what was permissible to wear, such as linen and cotton. His gatherings were free of vain talk, and they were only attended by the most virtuous of people. He loved to hear ahadith being read with their chains of narration. He was forebearing, honest, pious, pure, and trustworthy. He would contain himself and not become angry. He would never turn back someone in need or embarrass someone who spoke in front of him. He was extremely kind and charitable and I never saw him praying except in jama’ah.”

Adh-Dhahabi said about his death: “And I never saw a king whose death people were sad for except him. This is because he was loved by everyone: he was loved by the righteous and the wicked, the Muslim and the Kafir.” This was Salah-ad-Din Al-Ayyubi. This was the man behind the armor. This was his lifestyle and character, and it was nothing other than this that served as the platform for the amazing feats across the lands that we remember him for today.

Such lifestyle and character is something you will find common between all legends of Islam, whether scholars, leaders or martyrs. You always find them paying great attention to the daily recitation of the Qur’an, studying of the Shariah, giving lots of charity, avoiding useless talk, and living simple lives free of luxury and excessive comfort. This is really the way to success. There is no way you can dream of defending the Shariah if you don’t even have the willpower to implement it in your daily life.

What is interesting is Salah-ad-Din wasn’t always like this. Adh-Dhahabi mentions in ‘As-Siyar’ (15/434 and 436):

“Since his time as a ruler, he abandoned alcohol and worldly pleasures.”

“He used to drink alcohol, and then repented from it.”

That’s right. Salah-ad-Din Al-Ayyubi – this righteous man who singlehandedly changed the course of history – loved to drink and indulge in worldly pleasures. But he repented and transformed his life. This small fact teaches us a mighty lesson: not everyone is born in a life of righteousness. The great people we love and admire were not born with virtue. It also gives us hope that no matter how insignificant or lost we think we are, we can become someone truly great Insha Allah.

1. Wake up in the last third of the night to beg forgiveness from Allah.

“...and those who pray and beg Allah’s Pardon in the last hours of the night.” (Qur’an, 3:17)

2. At least once in a while, seclude yourself from people in order to contemplate.

“Those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth...” (Qur’an, 3:191)

3. Stay in the company of the righteous.

“And keep yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord...” (Qur’an, 18:28)

4. Remember Allah often.

“Remember Allah with much remembrance.” (Qur’an, 33:41)

5. Pray two units of prayer with sincerity and devotion.?

Guidance from The Prophet (saws)

Hadrat Anas ibn Malik (r.a.) said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) saying, "Allah, the Exalted, has Said: 'O son of Adam! I shall go on forgiving you so long as you pray to Me and aspire for My forgiveness, whatever may be your sins. O son of Adam! I do not care even if your sins should pile up to the sky and should you beg pardon of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam! If you come to Me with an earthful of sins and meet Me, not associating anything with Me in worship, I will certainly grant you as much pardon as will fill the earth.'''
Related by At-Tirmidhi.

Commentary:
Regardless of the quality or the quantity of the sins one might have committed in one’s past, if one turns to Allah Subhanah and seeks sincere forgiveness; it is expected that they will find their Lord Forgiving and Merciful. Regardless of whether the sins one might have accumulated are major or minor, regardless of whether the sins one might have accumulated are so much that if piled up they would reach the heavens…..if one turns in ‘taubah’ unto their Lord and seeks sincere forgiveness before they meet with their appointment of death, The Lord Most Merciful will envelop such a repentant believer in His Forgiveness and Mercy.
If one were to die in a state whereby one did not seek repentance for their sins, and the sins were so many that they would fill the whole earth….provided one did not associate anything in worship with the Lord Most Majestic Most High (ie. did not commit the abomination of ‘shirk’), their Lord Most Gracious will grant them with as much pardon as will fill the whole earth! Such is the magnitude of the vastness of the Lord Most Merciful Who Created!

Winning gold through intentions

1. Intention before the act: Use the golden touch

Daily acts can be converted into acts of worship by making our intentions pure for the sake of Allah’s pleasure. This is Ikhlas (doing our deeds sincerely for the sake of Allah).

2. Intention during the act: Spend it wisely

This means accomplishing our acts of worship in the right manner, i.e. as per the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Scholars say the above two are conditions for any act of worship to be valid, i.e. Ikhlas and having been done according to Sunnah.

3. Intention after the act: Preserve the outcome

After our deeds, we must hope for and have and anticipation of the reward from Allah (the Most High) when we meet Him, Insha Allah.

“O you who believe! Do not render in vain your Sadaqah (charity) by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he does not believe in Allah, nor in the Last Day. His likeness is the likeness of a smooth rock on which is a little dust; on it falls heavy rain which leaves it bare. They are not able to do anything with what they have earned. And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.” (Qur’an, 2:264)

Noble Teachings of the Qur'an

The Qur'an offers freedom of faith (10:108, 6:104, 10:99, 39:41, 11:121, 73:19, 43:88-89, 2:272, 76:29, 18:29, 42:48, 76:2-3, 3:20, 88:21-22, 16:82-83, etc.), freedom of religion (2:256, 109:6, 22:67-69, 42:15, 10:41, 2:139, 42:6, etc.), and freedom of freethinking (15:3, 17:84, 6:110, 10:11, 11:121, 52:45, etc.) without any temporal punishment.

The Qur'an teaches to believe in all the previous Prophets of God as they represent the chain of evolution of the Prophethood (2:1-4, 3:84, 2:285, 4:152, 37:37, etc.).

The Qur'an teaches that Islam is for everyone (2:62, 22:17, 21:107, 2:111-112, 5:69, 34:28, 103:1-3, 22:67, 10:47, 35:24, 16:36, 68:52, 49:13, 4:1, 2:213, 10:19, 17:70, etc.).

The Qur'an teaches love, mercy, kindness, and forgiveness (1:1-2, 85:14, 21:107, 60:7, 4:17, 7:199, 39:53, 16:119, 3:159, 15:85, 16:119, 19:96, 2:160, 2:163, 4:27-28, etc.).

The Qur'an is the only non-Jewish scripture in the world where Jews have been honored and protected in so many verses (2:40, 2:47-52, 2:57-58, 5:20, 5:44, 10:47, 10:90-93, 14:6, 17:2-3, 20:47-52, 20:77-80, 44:30-32, 45:16, etc.), good Jews have been praised and they have also been offered salvation if they follow the true teachings of Moses (2:62, 2:121-122, 3:113-115, 3:199, 5:12, 5:65-66, 5:69, 29:46, etc.).

The Qur'an is the only non-Christian scripture in the world where Jesus and Mary have been honored with very high respect (3:42-55, 5:44-46, 5:110, 43:59, Chapter 19 on Mary, etc.), good Christians have been praised and they have also been offered salvation if they follow the true teachings of Jesus (2:62, 2:121-122, 3:113-115, 3:199, 5:65-66, 5:69, 5:82, 29:46, etc.).

Unlike Bible that prescribes death penalty for idolatry and polytheism (Deuteronomy 17:3-5, 13:6-16; 2 Chronicles 15:13; Ephesians 5:5; Revelation 21:8; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Exodus 20:4-5; etc.), the Qur'an doesn't have any temporal punishment for the same (22:17, 6:107-8, 22:67-69, 17:84, 49:11).

The Qur'an teaches that the pre-Qur'anic people will be judged according to their own deeds and actions (2:134, 10:47, 35:24, 16:36, 40:78, 4:164, 17:15, 62:5, 5:44, 20:133-4, etc.).

The Qur'an is the only religious Book that strongly condemns female infanticide (16:58-59, 81:8-9, 6:137, 6:140, 6:151, 17:31).

The Qur'an teaches in various ways to free the slaves that come into possession as a result of war (90:12-13, 9:60, 5:89, 2:177, 4:3, 4:25, 4:92, 24:33, 58:3, 8:67, 47:4, etc.).

The Qur'an strongly condemns terrorism and oppression (4:75, 22:39-40, 9:13-14, 42:39-43, 38:28, 2:190-193).

The Qur'an strongly condemns unjust killing and suicide (5:32, 2:195, 4:29-30, 4:91-93, 17:31, 17:33, 6:151, 25:68, 3:21, etc.).

The Qur'an strongly condemns priesthood and religious peddlers (2:41, 2:79, 5:44, 3:187, 9:9, 9:31, 9:34, 2:174, 12:104, etc.).

The Qur'an strongly forbids eating up others' property (2:188, 4:2, 4:10, 4:161, etc.).

The Qur'an strongly condemns defrauders (83:1-4, 55:7-9, 17:35, 6:152, etc.).

The Qur'an teaches not to follow feeble oath-monger, slanderer, greedy, and hinderer of the good (68:10-13, 49:11-12).

The Qur'an protects religious temples (22:40).

The Qur'an teaches to follow the middle and straight path (17:29, 25:67, 2:143, 23:62, 4:171, 17:9, 2:286).

The Qur'an gives equal status and rights to men and women (4:1, 4:7, 4:124, 3:195, 16:97, 33:35, 49:13, etc.).

The Qur'an is probably the only religious Book where women have the right to inherit (4:7).

The Qur'an encourages men to give dower to women as free gift whom they marry (4:4).

The Qur'an teaches, contrary to the superstitious belief of the then Arabs, that adopted son and biological son are not the same (33:4-5).

The Qur'an teaches that majority may not be granted (6:116).

The Qur'an encourages traveling (29:20, 22:46, 6:11, 40:21, 47:10, 30:42, 3:137, etc.).

The Qur'an offers practical Golden Rule that can be followed (2:44, 41:34, 11:88, 60:7-9, 61:2-3, 8:61; Sahih Bukhari 8:73:26, 1:2:12).

The Qur'an teaches to invite people to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching and to reason with them in ways that are best and most gracious (16:125).

The Qur'an teaches to argue with the People of the Book in the best manner (29:46).

The Qur'an teaches that God begets not, nor is He begotten as begetting is an un-Godly act (112:3, 4:171, 19:35, 10:68, 19:88-92, 5:75, etc.).

Both the Qur'an and Bible teach that Jesus was a human (Acts 2:22; Qur'an 5:75, 25:20) and a Prophet of God (Matthew 21:11, Luke 24:19; Qur'an 2:87).

The Qur'an teaches not to believe in Trinity as Jesus himself never preached this kind of irrational doctrine (Mark 12:29; Qur'an 4:171, 5:73).

The Qur'an teaches not to believe in Original Sin as Jesus himself never preached this kind of inhumane doctrine (Ezekiel 18:20; Qur'an 17:15, 6:164, 53:38).

The Qur'an invites people from the depth of Darkness into Light (14:1, 57:9).

The Qur'an teaches not to practice monasticism as it is an impractical way of life (57:27).

The Qur'an teaches to have Imaan (conviction) in The One and Only Unseen God (2:3, 112:1-4, 67:12, 36:11, 42:51, etc.).

The Qur'an offers falsification test and challenge for the skeptics to falsify its Divine Claim (4:82, 17:88, 2:23-24, 10:37, etc.).

The Qur'an very emphatically and uniquely claims to be the Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds in so many verses (4:82, 17:88, 2:23-24, 10:37, 32:2, 26:192-4, 16:102, 36:5, 42:51-53, 41:52-53, 56:77-82, 69:40-51, 25:4-6, etc.).

The Qur'an offers various logics for the unbelievers of Creator (22:5, 75:36-40, 22:73, 23:91, 2:28, 17:99, 19:66-67, 21:22, 29:46, 6:99, etc.).

The Qur'an ensures absolute justice in this world and in the hereafter (4:135, 5:8, 4:58, 57:25, 39:69-70, 40:17, 21:47, 36:54, 2:281, 7:29, 16:111, 17:13-15, 20:134-135, 4:123, etc.).

The Qur'an teaches that this temporal world is a test for the hereafter (18:7, 67:2, 2:155, 2:214, 29:2-3), and each and every individual will be judged perfectly according to his/her own deeds and actions (36:54, 4:85, 40:17, 21:47, 36:54, 2:281, 7:29, 16:111, 17:13-15, 20:134-135, 42:24, 4:123).

The Qur'an promises eternal peace and salvation in the hereafter (85:11, 4:122, 14:23, 19:60-61, 32:19, 2:25, 2:112, 16:97, 4:124, etc.).

Who is more shy?

It is well known that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was extremely resolute in defending Islam and the Muslim community. He would not accept any compromise in matters of faith and would stand firm in resisting any injustice that may be aimed at even the weaker elements in the community. In fact he would defend the rights of non-Muslim people, provided that they did not participate in war against Islam and Muslims. Yet with all this firmness and courage, the Prophet was a very shy person when it came to his own personal matters or when the discussion involved some intimate matters such as body discharges.

Ayesha reports: “A woman asked the Prophet about the form of taking a bath after she has finished her period. ‘How do I conduct my bath,’ she said. He replied: ‘Take a piece of cotton, perfumed with musk, and use it to purify yourself.’ She asked: ‘How do I purify myself with it?’ He said: ‘Well, use it and purify yourself.’ She said: ‘How?’ He said: ‘All glory be to God! Do purify yourself.’ I pulled her toward me and said to her: ‘Use it to remove any traces of blood.’” (Related by Al-Bukhari).

Muslims used to ask the Prophet about every little detail. They realized that Islam meant much more than a belief or a conviction that certain principles are true. It is a complete way of life, which required them to conduct all their life affairs in accordance with its principles. Purification is an essential part of Islamic worship. A Muslim always keeps himself clean, washing off all impurity. Muslims are required to perform ablutions before they stand up in prayer. Likewise, they are required to wash all their bodies and their heads when they are in the state of ceremonial impurity. The Prophet told them this and they knew what is required. Hence, the woman’s question was not seeking this elementary information. She was asking for more intimate information concerning the cleanliness of the place where menses is discharged.

The Prophet understood what she meant. He, however, was too shy to speak to a woman explicitly about this. He had already told women how to take a purification bath. As he explained, a woman who has finished her period should bring enough water and whatever else she needs for cleanliness, washing her private parts. Then she performs the ordinary ablutions normally needed for prayer. Then she pours some water over her head and rubs her scalp, pushing her fingers through her hair. Then she pours water over all her body. After that, she uses a piece of cotton or wool and wet it with some perfume or musk and use it for purification. As the woman in this case, Asma bint Shakal, felt that purification meant ablution, in its two forms, she wondered how could she do the ablution with a piece of cotton or wool. The Prophet tried his best to make her understand what was beyond his words, but she was persistent, asking for more details. Here Ayesha realized the difficulty of the situation, pulled the woman aside and explained to her what the Prophet meant.

There is nothing embarrassing in all this. We only note that the Prophet was too shy to discuss such matters with a woman, even in the presence of his wife. However, Ayesha praised the woman and her people generally. She said: “Blessed be the Ansari women. Shyness has not stopped them from seeking better knowledge of their religion.”

A quick change of fortunes- Juwayriyyah (Barrah bint Al-Harith) - The wife of the Prophet (pbuh)

It is universally agreed by Muslim historians that no woman ever brought her own people greater blessings than Juwayriyyah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Her original name was Barrah bint Al-Harith, and we spoke last week of her falling into captivity, after her father, the chief of the Al-Mustalaq tribe, had planned to raid Madinah, but the Prophet’s quick action foiled his plans and led to a few of his people being killed, including Juwayriyyah’s own husband, and a large number of them taken captive, facing a life of slavery.

When she agreed terms with her master, Thabit ibn Qays, to buy her own freedom, she went to speak to the Prophet. Ayesha reported that as she opened the door, she saw a young, very attractive woman of about 20. “No one would see her without being fascinated by her beauty.” She was apprehensive and shy, but that could only make her look prettier.

Addressing the Prophet, she said: “Messenger of God! I am the daughter of Al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar, the chief of his people. I have come into such misfortune as you are certainly aware of. My lot fell to Thabit ibn Qays and I agreed with him terms to buy my freedom. I am here to appeal for your kind help.” Her face reflected her hearty appeal. She was aware that this was the only man who could easily bring about a speedy change of her situation. Hence, she waited for the answer, letting her eyes continue the appeal.

The Prophet reflected a little, recognizing her situation. He then said to her: “Would you consider a better offer?” All she had hoped for was a portion of the price she needed to pay for her freedom, but she was told that she could have a better alternative. What could that be? Would the Prophet give her most of the price? What else could he be thinking of? Her voice betrayed her eagerness to know as she said: “What offer, Messenger of God?” He said: “I will pay whatever you agreed on, and you be my wife.”

Could that be true? Could her situation be immediately transferred from that of a captive of war needing to beg help to buy her freedom to that of a wife of God’s messenger and the head of the Muslim state? She would then be in a much better position than the one she had among her own people, as the daughter of her tribe’s chief and the wife of one of its best young men. Hence, she immediately accepted.

Within a few days, the wedding took place. According to some reports, her father arrived in Madinah shortly before it was due to take place, and was present at the marriage. He started his journey with the aim of securing his daughter from captivity. By the time he arrived in Madinah, his daughter had accepted the Prophet’s offer and preparations for her marriage to him were under way. The Prophet changed her name, as he did with Umm Salamah’s daughter and Zaynab bint Jahsh, each of whom was also called Barrah. Barrah means “devout and dutiful.” He said: “You do not know who of you is truly devout and dutiful. So, do not make such a claim.” He called his new wife Juwayriyyah, which means “little young woman.”

Abu Hamzah Al-Thumali narrates that Ali Bin Husayn used to carry bread on his back in the darkness of the night and follow the poor people (to give it to them). He used to say, “Charity in the darkness, of the night extinguishes the Lords anger.”

Merits of reciting the greatest verse of the Qur’an

AYAT-ul-Kursi (Qur’an, 2:255) is the most magnificent verse of the Qur’an.

Ubayy Bin Ka’b says once the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked me, “O Abu Mundhir, do you know which verse of the Qur’an with you is the most magnificent?” I submitted: “Allah-o-la-illaaha illa huwal-hayyul Qaiyum…” (2:255).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) thumped my chest as a gesture of appreciation and said: “Congratulations on your knowledge (of the Qur’an), O Abu Mundhir!” (Sahih Muslim)

Abu Hurairah narrates:

Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) appointed me to guard the Sadqa Fitr (alms given during Ramadan before Eid). One night an intruder came and started collecting the food. I caught hold of him and said: “I will produce you before the Prophet (peace be upon him)” but the intruder pleaded: “I am a poor man and have number of children to support. I am badly in need of help and succor.” On hearing this woeful tale I let him go.

In the morning the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked me: “Abu Hurairah what happened to your thief last night?” I answered, “O Messenger of Allah! He pleaded his dire necessity and complained about his large family. As such I felt pity for him and let him go.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) remarked: “He has lied, he will come back again.”

I was sure he would come again as the Prophet (peace be upon him) had said, and therefore I kept watch and waited for him. The thief did come again and started gathering food. I caught him again and said that I would definitely take him to the Prophet (peace be upon him).

On this he requested that he was a needy person and had a large family to support and that he may be let off and promised that he would not come back. I felt pity for him once more and let him go.

Next morning the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: “Abu Hurairah what about your prisoner of last night? I answered: “O Messenger of Allah, he pleaded his dire necessity and the fact that he had a large family, and therefore I felt pity for him and let him go.” He (peace be upon him) said: “He told you a lie and will come back again!”

So I maintained a watch for him a third time. He did come to steal food (from the alms store) Abu Hurairah says: “I caught hold of him and said; I shall certainly take you to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and this is the last of the three times you promised that you will not come back, (but you have broken your promise and came back).”

He pleaded: “Please let me go and I will in return teach you some phrases which will bring benefit and mercy from Allah.” I asked him: “What are those?” He said: “When you go to bed (during night) recite the verse (Ayat-ul-Kursi, 2:255). (As a result of its blessings) Allah will appoint a guard to protect you, and Satan will not be able to come near to you till morning.”

So I allowed him to go. Next morning when I visited the Prophet (peace be upon him) he asked me: “What did you do with your prisoner last night?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, he said that he would teach me some phrases through which I would receive benefit and mercy of Allah. On this I let him go.” He (peace be upon him) asked, “What are those phrases?” I said: “He told me, when you go to your bed for sleep, recite the verse ‘Ayat-ul-Kursi’ from beginning to end, and told me that Allah would post a guard on me and Satan would not be able to come near me till the morning.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “This time he told you the truth although he is a liar. Abu Hurairah, do you know with whom you were speaking during these three nights?” I answered; “No.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “It was Satan (the devil).”

Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) also said that whoever recites Ayat-ul-Kursi after every Fardh (obligatory) Salah, nothing can keep him away from entering Paradise except death. (Al-Bukhari)

Serving the interests of the community

Among all the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Umm Salamah was perhaps the one who was most sensitive to the interests of the community. She shared the hopes and the difficulties of her fellow Muslims at both the individual and the community levels. We saw how she expressed their feelings to the Prophet when the Muslims were told that they could not go into Makkah for their worship rituals and had to return home. Her advice to the Prophet on that day took away all the strain and ensured their compliance with his orders.

After the Tabuk expedition a few Muslims who did not join the Muslim army tied themselves up in the mosque, as a sign of repentance. They were untied when it was time for prayer, and then they tied themselves up again when the obligatory prayer had finished. They were uncertain what judgment was to be made in their cases. Their self-imposed restraint was a gesture of their repentance. One of them was Abu Lubabah.

As the Prophet was at Umm Salamah’s home one night, just before the dawn prayer, he received revelations that included the Verse that says: “There are others who have acknowledged their sins, after having mixed righteous deeds with evil ones. It may well be that God will accept their repentance. God is Much-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful.” (9: 102)

The Prophet smiled and Umm Salamah asked him why he smiled. He said: “God has accepted Abu Lubabah’s repentance.” She asked him: “May I be the one who gives him the good news?”

She opened her door and looked inside the mosque. She said: “Abu Lubabah! Rejoice, for God has accepted your repentance.” Some people rushed to release him, but he refused, saying that he would beg them not to do so, for he wanted the Prophet to release him. We see how she was so pleased for someone who was totally unrelated to her. She shared his joy at the happy news.

Many years later, when the Muslim community went through the very difficult days that saw the assassination of the third Caliph, Uthman, and a serious split in community, another wife of the Prophet, Ayesha, was about to leave Madinah, marching at the head of an army that sought to gather support for their stand.

Umm Salamah objected to this attitude. She went to Ayesha and counseled her against going. She said it was wrong for a widow of the Prophet to embark on such a course of action.

As for her own position in those days, she was totally supportive of Ali, the fourth Caliph. She went to him and said: “I would have joined your army, but I know that such an action would be in disobedience of God’s orders and I believe you would not accept it from me. However, this is my son, Omar. He is dearer to me than my own life. He will join you and will fight for your cause.”

Her position then was characteristic of her great insight that enabled her to gauge what best served the interests of the Muslim community.

Umm Salamah lived long after the Prophet. In fact, she was the last of the Prophet’s wives to die. Her death took place in year 61, and she was buried at Al-Baqee, the burial place of many of the Prophet’s companions in Madinah.

(the mother of the faithful believers) The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allah's Apostle was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright day light, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (Allah alone) continuously for many days before his desire to see his family. He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food like-wise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet replied, "I do not know how to read.
The Prophet added, "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, 'I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?' Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, 'Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) has created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous." (96.1, 96.2, 96.3) Then Allah's Apostle returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, "I fear that something may happen to me." Khadija replied, "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your Kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones."
Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, who, during the PreIslamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to Waraqa, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!" Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" Allah's Apostle described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Allah's Apostle asked, "Will they drive me out?" Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly." But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while.
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari while talking about the period of pause in revelation reporting the speech of the Prophet "While I was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw the same angel who had visited me at the cave of Hira' sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I got afraid of him and came back home and said, 'Wrap me (in blankets).' And then Allah revealed the following Holy Verses (of Quran):
'O you (i.e. Muhammad)! wrapped up in garments!' Arise and warn (the people against Allah's Punishment),... up to 'and desert the idols.' (74.1-5) After this the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly."

Women encouraging good

AS an Ummah, it is our responsibility to not only do good and leave evil, but also to encourage and enjoin others to it. Allah said in the Qur’an:

“You are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.” (Qur’an, 3:110)

The status Allah gave Muslims is by virtue of: our acknowledgment of our Creator’s Lordship and His over us that we worship and obey Him alone; enjoining what is right; and forbidding what is wrong. If we lose these virtues, we lose the status. Enjoining good and forbidding evil is a noble deed, though regretfully it has acquired a negative image today.

The focus of this article is, however, on the role women can play in carrying out this duty. It should be known that this is everyone’s job and not restricted to men alone. In fact, women can do a great job in carrying out this religious duty.

As mothers, women are mostly responsible for the upbringing of children. This is where enjoining of good and forbidding of evil starts. Children are normally closer to their mothers, who have a great influence in what children grow up to be.

By virtue of motherhood, women are probably the greatest contributors to the society and the economy. Great mothers not only provide leaders for the next generation but also virtuous intellectuals brought up on strong Islamic principles.

Apart from motherhood, there are several examples of how women in the past carried out this duty. Mother of the believers, Ayesha, ordered her brother, Abdur Rahman Bin Abu Bakr, to correctly make Wudhu (Sahih Muslim, no. 240)

Maymunah threatened one of her male relatives who smelt of alcohol that she would boycott him unless he undertook the Islamic punishment for drinking alcohol (At-Tabaqat Al-Kubra)

when Umm Salamah saw some women turning away beggars, she rebuked them and asked them to give something to the beggars, even if a date. The point to note is that these great women did not hesitate in commanding good and forbidding evil.

Women can forbid evil and enjoin good in their homes, places of work, mosques, and schools. In the past, old women’s advice was rarely ignored unless it was incorrect. According to a narration in Al-Isabah fi Tamyiz As-Sahaba (8/121), an old woman known as Samra Bint Nuhayk Al-Asadiyyah would go to the markets and carry out this as a religious duty (it should be noted that this narration does not have a full chain of narrators).

Elderly people were earlier respected and honored. Imagine the reaction an old woman will get today if she advises a young girl not to throw away food or comments on her dress in a shopping mall! I think we all know the answer.

Conditioning the youth towards good is a pressing need in our times. But it should be done with wisdom and beautiful preaching. Our goal should be to bring them onboard, not to push them overboard. Kind words, patience and positive attitude is the key. How often, just because of our attitude we push people away from good.

More important than attitude is knowledge. One has to know what is right and what is wrong before she tries to propagate it. It may be possible that what one was considering something to be good or bad was in fact influenced from her country’s culture. Learning Islam precedes practicing. Knowledge comes before action.

Last, but definitely not the least, is we must make sure our intention is sincere for the sake of Allah. Worldly motives, prejudice, and desires should stay out of any religious duty. Our worship and good deeds will not be accepted by Allah unless it is for His sake alone.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) has mentioned the importance of this duty in the following Hadith: “By the One in Whose hands is my soul, you have to enjoin right and forbid wrong, otherwise Allah will be about to send upon you a punishment from Him, then you would pray to Him but He would not answer you.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

ABU Bakr Al-Siddiq, on his deathbed, called Umar and said:

Fear Allah, O Umar. Know that there are deeds to be done in the day which Allah will not accept if done at night, and there are deeds to be done at night which He will not accept if done during the day. He will not accept extra (Nafl) deeds unless you fulfill the obligatory ones.

The scales of some will be weighty on the Day of Resurrection only because they followed the truth in this life and it was weighty to them. And the scales on which the truth will be placed tomorrow truly deserve to be heavy. The scales of some will be light on the Day of Resurrection only because they followed falsehood in this life and it was a light matter to them. And scales in which falsehood will be placed tomorrow truly deserve to be light.

Allah the Exalted has mentioned the people of Paradise and mentioned them in the context of their best deeds, and overlooked their evil deeds, so when I remember them I say to myself: I fear that I will not be included among them.

And Allah the Exalted has mentioned the people of Hell and mentioned them in the context of their worst deeds and rejected their best deeds, so when I remember them I say: I hope I won’t be amongst them. Allah’s worshippers should always be in a state of hope and fear, they shouldn’t entertain flimsy wishes about Allah and neither should they despair of Allah’s mercy.

If you keep to this advice of mine, no one who is not with you now should be more beloved to you than death – and it is sure to come to you. But if you disregard this advice, no one who is not with you now should be more hated to you than death – and you cannot escape it.

HADITH No. 1

Hadhrat Abu Uthman (Radhiyallaho anho) says: "I was once sitting under a tree with Hadhrat Salmaan (Radhiyallaho anho). He caught hold of a dry branch of the tree and shook it till all its leaves fell off. He then said to me, "0, Abu Uthman! (Radhiyallaho anho) Will you not ask me why I am doing this?" "Do tell me," I entreated. He said, "The Apostle (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) of Allah had done exactly like this before me, while I was with him under a tree.

"Establish salaat at the two ends of the day, and at the approaches of the night. Verily, good deeds annul ill deeds. This is a reminder for the mindful. (XI: 114)"

The behaviour of Hadhrat Salmaan (Radhiyallaho anho) in the above Hadith displays the profound love which the Sahaabah had for the Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe

wasallam). They would often cherish the sweet memories of the time when the Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) was living among them. They would, while quoting him, enact exactly what they had seen him doing at a particular moment.

It is really very difficult to cover all the traditions of the Holy Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam), which deal with the importance of salaat and which declare forgiveness for those who guard it. As had already been said before, the theologians restrict this declaration of forgiveness to saghaa'ir (minor sins) only, but in the text of the Hadith there is no such restriction.

"O, My Lord! I have wronged my soul a great wrong, and none forgive the sins save Thou alone. Then forgive me and have mercy on me. Verily, Thou art the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Following benefits are attributed to Miswaak:

1. It cleanses and sweetens the mouth and checks its bad smell.

2. It is a cause of Allah's pleasure and a blow to the Devil.

3. Allah and his angels love the person doing miswaak.

4. It strengthens the gums and improves eye-sight.

5. It is a purge against bile and phlegm.

Commentary:

One’s heart is always open to trouble, turmoil, and ordeals as one drifts from one situation or trial to another. If one is not supported by Allah Subhanah, one can easily deviate from the Right Path at any moment.

That is precisely why even the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would constantly supplicate his Lord Most Gracious to save his heart from turning towards evil and keep it steadfast towards the Path of Allah, for it is Allah Subhanah Alone Who has the Absolute Power to control the hearts of His slaves.

Generosity of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)

DURING the caliphate of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) there was a severe famine. The people of Madina were suffering due to shortage of food.

A caravan of a 1000 camels loaded with a large stock of food-grains belonging to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived from Shaam (Syria). Several merchants offered to buy all of it.

He asked them what profit they would pay. “Five per cent,” they said. He answered that he could get higher profit than that. They began to argue with him, saying that they did not know of any merchant who would offer him more than their quote.

He said to them, “I know of one who repays a profit of more than seven hundred to a dirham.” He then recited the verse of the Noble Qur’an in which Allah mentioned this profit. “The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.” (Qur’an, 2:261)

“O traders! Bear witness with me that I donate all this to the poor people of Madinah!” Uthman said.

Dear readers, whatever we give for the sake of Allah is really ours and whatever we keep with us will one day be someone else’s. Let us follow the footsteps of our Prophet and the pious Sahabah, with whom Allah was pleased, by helping the needy ones.

Qualities of Muttaqun who will inherit Paradise

“And march forth in the way (which leads to) forgiveness from your Rabb, and for Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth prepared for Al-Muttaqun (the pious).” (Qur’an, 3:133)

ALLAH in this beautiful verse of Surah Al-Imran is urging us to march forth towards His Mercy and Paradise, the final abode prepared specially for “Al-Muttaqeen”. Allah clearly mentions that the distinguished people for whom he created Paradise are the “Muttaqun.”

We all, of course, want this privileged status on the Day Of Judgment Insha Allah. But who are they? How can we be like them? Allah did not leave us wondering about their characteristics, but specified them in the very next verse:

“Those who spend (in Allah’s cause – charity) in prosperity and adversity, who repress anger and who pardon men; verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (those who do good).” (Qur’an, 3:134)

• “They spend (in Allah’s cause) in times of prosperity and adversity.”

Allah has mentioned at several places the virtue of charity. Allah said:

“The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is as the likeness of a grain (of corn), it grows seven ears and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He wills and Allah is All Sufficient for his creatures needs, All-Knower.” (Qur’an, 2:261)

It is Allah’s promise that spending for His sake will be requited by Allah and that this investment will never be in loss Insha Allah.

• “They repress their anger.”

Allah knows his slaves. He did not make it difficult for us by ordering us not to get angry. Instead, He said that when we get angry we should repress it or swallow it.

Next time when something doesn’t go as planned or someone cuts your lane while driving, don’t burst. These affairs are too trivial for us to be smitten by anger. Let’s try our best to control our anger. We never know, this quality of ours might be the reason for us to be amongst the Muttaqeen who will enter Jannah!

• “Who pardon men.”

Forgiving is yet another admirable quality of the Muttaqeen. Forgiving is not just accepting apologies, but forgiving them from the heart and making Du’a for them that Allah also forgives them.

“...let them pardon and forgive. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Qur’an, 24:22)

“...and those who came after them say: “Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful.” (Qur’an, 59:10).

The verses of the Qur’an are crystal clear, we just need to strive our utmost to inculcate those qualities in us for achieving the best in this world and in the Hereafter.

Today people think that women are liberated in the West and that the women’s liberation movement began in the 20th century. Actually, the women’s liberation movement was not begun by women but was revealed by God to a man in the seventh century by the name of Muhammad (peace be upon him), who is known as the last Prophet of Islam. The Qur'an and the Traditions of the Prophet (Hadith or Sunnah) are the sources from which every Muslim woman derives her rights and duties.

Her position in early Islam was really an exemplary one, one that should be studied and known by every woman as well as every liberationist in the twentieth century--- in America as well as in the Muslim World. The Muslim Woman's Dress

Fever, a blessing in disguise

FEVER wipes out one’s sins and rids his body from dead substances and germs. It is a blessing in disguise.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When a believer gets sick or feverish, it is like metal when put on fire, the bad is gone and the good remains.” (Al-Bayhaqi)

He (peace be upon him) also describes the intensity of fever by saying: “Fever is coal from hell, get rid of it by using cold water.” (Ibn Majah)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the cursing of fever by saying: “Do not curse a fever because it abolishes sins like fire abolishes dirt from iron.” (Ibn Majah)

The cure the Prophet (peace be upon him) told us for fever 1400 years ago is still practiced as one of the best ways to reduce fever.

A bacterial or viral infection usually raises the temperature of a person. Antibiotics are useless with viral infections, such as the influenza and the common cold, although the patient might sweat and have a very high fever. Putting cold pads on a patient’s forehead is used by doctors in several hospitals though medicines like aspirin and paracetamol are abundant.

Using water to reduce fever is not limited to using cold pads. Drinking a lot of fluids is also helpful. This is also understood from the wordings of the Prophetic narration: “cool it with water.” Water is either what the patient drinks, what is given intravenously or what the patient puts on his face or body to cool the fever.

Another scientific miracle can be found in the Prophet’s statement, “the bad is gone and the good remains.” To understand this, let’s look at what fever really is.

Fever occurs when the body temperature rises above normal (37 C). There is an area in the brain which is a temperature regulator.

When a germ enters the body, it starts secreting toxins. Toxins affect the temperature regulator causing its temperature to rise. The substances that cause this rise in temperature are called pyrogens. Pyrogens are caused not only by germs but also by the ruined tissues in the body after being affected with germs.

When the temperature rises in the temperature regulator, the rest of the body has to comply. It increases its temperature in response. Soon, the whole body feels feverish and the patient’s temperature rises.

When the inflammation worsens, the germs increase and consequently ruin the tissues. The germs and the pyrogens will find the body’s defense system ready to attack and eat the by-products of the germs and rid the body of them. While doing this, it releases to the body fluids a substance called leukocyte pyrogens or endogenous.

Therefore, the fever remains while the body is cleansing itself from the by-products, confirming again the Prophetic narration.

Memory tests performed on the men showed that most of them best remembered photographs of headless women in bikinis despite viewing each image for only a fraction of a second.
Anecdotally, Muslim women often speak of feeling "protected," "safe," and "respected" when they wear the hijab (religiously mandated modest dress that covers the shape of the body and includes the headscarf or veil). Now there may also be evidence to show that their feelings are rooted in scientific fact.
When psychologist Susan Fiske and a team of researchers at Princeton University performed MRI brain scans on heterosexual men who viewed a series of images showing both scantily clad and fully clothed men and women, they found that the men had an unmistakable response to women wearing less clothing.
The less they wore, the more likely it was for the premotor cortex and the posterior middle temporal gyrus to light up. These are the areas of the brain associated with tool use, hand manipulation, and the urge to take action. (Cikara, Dell'Amore)
"It was as if they immediately thought about how they might act on these bodies," Fiske explained during the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science which was held in Chicago, February 12-16. "They are reacting to these photographs as people react to objects," she said. (Nicholson)

Fiske and her team further examined the men for hostile sexist attitudes. They found that those rated as more hostile had little activity in areas of the brain that are associated with considering another person's thoughts and feelings (a phenomenon called mentalizing) when looking at sexualized photos of women in bikinis. "They are not thinking about their minds," said Fiske. (Cikara, Dell'Amore, Landau)
Sexualized Women Viewed as Less Human
Several studies further demonstrate the link between viewing pornography and committing violence against women, including rape and sexual assault.
According to a lay summary of Fiske's study provided to IslamOnline.net, when a man's mentalizing network shuts down, this means he views sexualized women as "less human." (Cikara) This type of dehumanization is something Fiske says has rarely been observed in the laboratory setting—only "once before," according to a recent National Geographic article, which cited a study in which people were shown "off-putting photographs of homeless people and drug addicts." (Dell'Amore)
In the case of scantily clad women, however, men do not demonstrate the same feelings of avoidance as they do with populations like the homeless, which are often shunned by society. Instead, they wish to act on them as one would "push," "handle," or "grab" an object—first-person action verbs that men associated with the images of women in swimsuits. (Dell'Amore, Landau)
Mina Cikara, a Princeton University graduate student who was involved in conducting the study, added that men do not view their wives or sisters in the same manner they view sexualized images of women. In addition, men associated the images of women who were more fully clothed with third-person verbs, such as "she pushes," "she handles," and "she grabs," which, according to Fiske, implies that men view fully-clothed women as having more command over their own actions and not as objects to be manipulated. More Clothing, More Respect

According to Fiske, the results of the study have important implications for women, especially in the workplace as it has previously been shown that viewing sexualized images of women can affect how men perceive women and interact with them afterwards. (Landau, Sample) A sexism study conducted by Lawrence University professor, Peter Glick, also found that professional women who wear provocative attire in the workplace are perceived by their co-workers as being less competent and less intelligent, especially when they are in positions of power. According to DiversityJobs.com, Glick's study suggests that "women in higher level and high power jobs may need to dress more modestly and conservatively to win the respect of their colleagues." Several studies further demonstrate the link between viewing pornography and committing violence against women, including rape and sexual assault. In the wars of Bosnia and Iraq, soldiers who committed atrocious crimes and dehumanized the other side were often found to be regular consumers of pornography, even viewing pornography on purpose to "psyche themselves up" for the work of killing. Fiske compared the results of her study to studies showing that viewing television can desensitize one to the effects of violence. "You have to be aware of the effect of these images on people," Fiske told The Daily Princetonian. "They're not neutral. They do have an effect on how people think about other women." Dignity and Confidence
"There were times where I wish I was covered up more so that I could just get home without worrying about who might be following me."
Despite mounting evidence showing the benefits of modest and conservative dress, media portrayals of the hijab frequently depict Muslim women as victims of oppression, mind-control, and abuse.
Karen Danielson, however, maintains that wearing the hijab gives her both dignity and confidence. Danielson, an American living in Jordan, first wore the hijab more than two decades ago, shortly after embracing Islam in 1983.
"When I walk in public, I cannot be looked at or judged based on my sensuality or lack of either, or how I attract or not attract men," she explained to IslamOnline.net. "I define myself based on my upright behavior and intelligence—what my dress upholds—and I am humbled in my modest dress."
"I feel that I can be myself, a unique individual with her own voice to speak," added Sumayah Finnigan. "I am not conforming to the majority in what they say and wear and thus I am me - which is thoroughly liberating."
Balqees Mohammed, an American who embraced Islam in 1979, holds similar views and told IslamOnline.net that the hijab "promotes modesty...for the woman as well as all those around her."
Mohammed, who lives in Saudi Arabia and covers her face in addition to the rest of her body, says that her way of dressing "causes others, particularly men, to not be so free to engage in unnecessary discussion."
Hijab and Safety
"The message that the woman gives when she wears Islamic dress is as follows: 'Respect me for who I am. I am not a sex object.'"
"I definitely feel safer wearing hijab and dressing modestly in general," Cari Abudeyeh, another American living in Jordan and a practicing Muslim of twelve years told IslamOnline.net.
"I feel it is my barrier against men staring or disrespecting me and my boundaries. It is a barrier to prevent or change that first instinctive look men give you to check you out and see what you are 'about,' a barrier to prevent sexual feelings you didn't intend them to feel or ideas in their heads that are created by dressing provocatively."
She went on to say that "It's a protection against men approaching you in an inappropriate manner, helping to influence their decision in the way they stand by you, talk to you, look at you, or even prevent them from touching you."
Finnigan, who is from London, contrasts wearing the hijab, which she describes as "an act of obedience to the Creator" that "makes women safer in both the literal sense and the spiritual sense," with the feelings of vulnerability she used to experience before accepting Islam and the hijab in 1999.
"There were times where I wish I was covered up more so that I could just get home without worrying about who might be following me," said Finnigan. "Every night I would venture out and return home always looking over my shoulder, afraid I would be attacked or raped."
"There will always be those who will or may attack women regardless of their manners or style of dress," acknowledges Mohammed. However, she sees the Muslim hijab as "an added help to ward off possible physical approaches."
"One of the main objectives of hijab is to safeguard women from the gazes of people of weak morals and from those seeking to indulge in unlawful worldly pleasures," says Sheikh Riyad Al-Musaymiri, a professor at Al-Imam University in Riyadh. (IslamToday.com)

According to IslamToday.com, some Western observers have assumed that the head covering of a woman is meant to show her inferiority to men.
"This could not be further from the truth. The Qur'an explicitly states that the reason for her dressing this way is so that she will be respected. The message that the woman gives when she wears Islamic dress is as follows: 'Respect me for who I am. I am not a sex object.'" (IslamToday.com)
For Mohammed, the choice to wear the hijab was an obvious one. "For me, it was not a question of safety. I never even thought of it in that light," she explained.
"It was a question of following Allah's directives. For me, I was [neither] happy nor satisfied in becoming a Muslim only half-way. Either I became a Muslim and followed the commands and directives the best that I could, or I remained as I was previously."
"My dress helps to remind me about my behavior and my religion and it indicates to others the same," added Danielson. "And that is security on more levels than just safety in public; it is peace of mind and a protected heart that is molded. Alhamdulillah (Praise to God)!"

Allah is pleased with repentence…

Hadrat Anas ibn Malik (r.a.), the servant of the Messenger of Allah (saws) narrated: ‘The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "Verily, Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His slave than a person who has lost his camel in a waterless desert carrying his provision of food and drink. He, having lost all hopes (to get his camel and provisions back), lies down in shade and is disappointed about his (lost) camel; when all of a sudden he finds that camel standing before him. He takes hold of its reins and then out of boundless joy blurts out: 'O Allah, You are my slave and I am Your lord. He commits this mistake out of extreme joy."’

Commentary:

Nothing pleases Allah Subhanah more than a person who has transgressed the prescribed limits of Allah, and that person realizing his error turns unto his Lord and Creator in ‘taubah’, and seeks sincere forgiveness for his sins.

In another narration, the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best (or most loved by Allah) of those sinners are those who constantly seek repentance.’

Regardless of the quantity or the quality of the sins one might have committed in one’s past, if one turns back unto their Lord Most Merciful and seeks sincere repentance, Allah Subhanah has promised to forgive all the sins of His repentant slaves.

Hadrat Abu Dharr al-Ghaffari (r.a.) reported: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) saying: "A person who attributes his fatherhood to anyone other than his real father, knowing that he is not his father, commits an act of disbelief. And he who makes a claim of anything which in fact does not belong to him, is none of us. He should make his abode in Hell, and he who labels anyone as disbeliever or calls him the enemy of Allah and he is in fact not so, his charge will revert to him.''’

Commentary:

Amongst the grave sins which would be tantamount to an act of ‘kufr’ or disbelief in the Sight of Allah Subhanah are:

1. To intentionally attribute one’s lineage or fatherhood to a person who is not one’s biological father.

2. To falsely claim something which one knows does not rightfully belong to them.

3. To label or accuse a true believer of disbelief, or accuse them of being an enemy of Allah.

Hadrat Abdullah Ibn Umar (r.a.) said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "Allah has prohibited you from taking an oath by your fathers. He who must take an oath, may do so by swearing in the Name of Allah or he should remain silent.''’

Commentary:

It is absolutely and categorically prohibited and forbidden for a believer who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day to take an oath in the name of one’s father (or absolutely anything in creation)….for an oath can only be taken in the Blessed Name of Allah Subhanah, for He Alone is Truly a Witness to everything.

In another authentic narration the Messenger of Allah (saws) declared: ‘He who takes an oath by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of ‘Kufr’ (disbelief) or ‘shirk’ (polytheism).’

Commentary:

The Messenger of Allah (saws) preferred to make supplications which were short and general in nature, but wholesome and comprehensive in its meanings.

Huda: Guidance towards virtue, ability to do good deeds, and remain steadfast on the Straight Path of Allah Subhanah.

Tuqa: To comply wholeheartedly with the Commands of Allah and to prevent oneself from what the Lord has forbidden is ‘taqwa’ (piety, or the fear of Allah).

Afafa: means prevention from sins and also means evasion from seeking help from others.

Ghina: enough sustenance which makes one independent of all others except Allah Subhanah.

Guidance from The Prophet (saws)

Hadrat Aishah (r.a.), the mother of the believers, reported: ‘The Messenger of Allah (saws) never omitted four rakah (voluntary) prayer before the ‘dhuhr’ prayer and the two rakah (voluntary) prayer before dawn (Fajr) prayer.’

Commentary:

Amongst the ‘nafl’ or extra prayers which the Prophet (saws) never failed to offer were the four-rakah voluntary prayers before the obligatory ‘dhuhr’ prayer and the two-rakah voluntary prayer before the obligatory ‘fajr’ prayer.

These six-rakahs are amongst the twelve rakahs of what is known as the Sunnah Muaqqedah prayers which the Prophet (saws) almost never ever missed. The other Sunnah Muaqqedah prayers other than the ones listed above are:

1. two-rakahs after the obligatory ‘dhuhr’ prayer.

2. two-rakahs after the obligatory ‘magrib’ prayer.

3. and two-rakahs after the obligatory ‘isha’ prayer.

Why Do We Have Problems In Our Lives?

Allah Almighty is All-Knowing and All-Wise. He is also the Most Compassionate, and Most Merciful, without doubt. Yet, in His Ultimate Wisdom, Allaah afflicts His slaves from time to time with disasters and calamities, the reasons for which cannot, fully, be comprehended. And it is not befitting any of his creatures to question His Doings.
”He cannot be questioned for His acts, but they will be questioned (for theirs)”.
However, some of the reasons may be as follows. And Allah knows best.
Through calamities, Allah tests the Believers:
Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: We believe, - and will not be tested. And We indeed tested those who were before them. [Al-Ankaboot:2]
Or think you that you will enter Paradise without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? They were afflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said, When (will come) the Help of Allah? Yes! Certainly, the Help of Allah is near! [Al-Baqarah:214]
Through calamities, Allah forgives sins and raises our status:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There is nothing that befalls a believer, not even a thorn that pricks him, but Allah will record one good deed for him and will remove one bad deed from him. (Muslim)
Also, he (pbuh) said: Trials will continue to befall the believing man and woman, with regard to themselves, their children and their wealth, until they meet Allah with no sin on them. (Tirmidhi- Saheeh)
Through calamities, Allah distinguishes between people:
By testing us, Allah filters the pure from the evil, the good from the bad, the true from the false, and the believer from the hypocrite.
Allah will not leave the believers in the state in which you are now, until He distinguishes the wicked from the good [Aal Imraan:179]
And Allah will certainly make known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make known (the falsehood of) those who are liars, (although Allah knows all that before putting them to test) [Al-Ankaboot:3]
Through disasters, Allah warns us & reminds us so we may return to Him:
This is one of the greatest reasons behind calamities and trials, that Allah warns us to correct our mistakes and mend our ways. If we do so, it is good only for us. If we don’t pay heed, surely, only WE are the losers.
Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad). And We seized them with extreme poverty and loss in health (with calamities) so that they might humble themselves (believe with humility). [Anaam :42]
See they not that they are put in trial once or twice every year (with different kinds of calamities, disease, famine)? Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it) [At-Tawbah: 126]
Calamities and disasters strike because of our sins:
And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much [al-Shoora:30]
Disasters and calamities are a means of punishment:
And indeed, We destroyed generations before you when they did wrong, while their Messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they were not such as to believe! Thus do We requite the people who are Mujrimoon (criminals) [Yoonus:13]
If one is patient, they are also a means of great reward in the Hereafter:
The Prophet (pbuh) said: On the Day of Resurrection, when people who had suffered affliction are given their reward, those who were healthy will wish their skins had been cut to pieces with scissors when they were in the world (when they see the great REWARD for suffering) (Tirmidhi- Saheeh)
Disasters and calamities are reminders that the world is only temporary:
If the world were free of calamities, man would love it more and feel content with it, and would forget about the Hereafter. But calamities wake him up from his negligence and make him strive for the place (al-Jannah) in which there are NO calamities or trials.
Calamities and trials remind us that we are so weak:
Problems and disasters are a sign of man’s weakness and his need for his Lord. Man cannot succeed unless he realizes his need for his Lord and starts beseeching Him.
Worship during hard times has a special favor and a special reward:
The Prophet (pbuh) said: Worshipping at times of tribulation and confusion is like migrating to join me. (Muslim)
Calamities make a person appreciate the blessings he has from Allah:
Blessings that come after pain, hardship and calamity are more precious to people. So then they appreciate the blessings as they should be appreciated, and thank Allah.
If things are always easy, a person may forget all the blessing given to him By Allah and not be grateful for it, so Allah tests him by taking some of them away, as a reminder to him to be grateful for it. And, only the one whose heart is open will feel this. Those who have no heart do not give thanks for the blessings of Allah; rather they are arrogant towards Allah and His creation.
When Muslims help those Muslims who have been afflicted by calamity, they will be rewarded for that:
The Prophet (pbuh) said: The likeness of the believers in their mutual love, mercy and compassion is that of the body; when one part of it suffers, the rest of the body joins it in staying awake and suffering fever. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Fitnah of Dajjaal

Q- We hear about the Dajjaal and the Fitnah (tribulations) surrounding him, from which the Messenger (peace be upon him) sought refuge (in Allah), and we have been commanded to seek refuge (in Allah) from his fitnah. So who is the Dajjaal? And what are his attributes?

A – Dajjaal is a man who will appear towards the end of time, and Jews will follow him. His appearance is a sign of the Last Hour, and he will bring with him immense Fitan (tests and trials) which will have an adverse effect on the Iman (of Muslims). Quite possibly many people may perish because of his Fitnah, except those whom Allah protects.

As for his attributes, he would be a Kafir man, blind in one eye. He will seek to divert people from their religion by whatever means possible. So his Fitnah and danger will be immense. It is obligatory upon us to seek refuge in Allah from his Fitnah, as we have been commanded (to do so) by the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Should we then, who probably commit sins with every breath we take, not seek pardon and repent unto the Lord Most Gracious, Most Merciful?

Hadrat Abdullah Ibn Masud (r.a.) said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "He who (on befalling a calamity) slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and traditions of the Days of Ignorance is none of us.''’
Related by Bukhari and Muslim. Hadith quoted from Riyad-us-Saliheen (Chapter 302, Hadith # 1658)

Commentary:

It simply does not befit the character of a believer to wail, or lament, or slap one’s cheeks, or chest, or tear one’s clothes, etc. when afflicted by a calamity as a trial from their Lord. One should recognize that their affliction is no more than a trial from their Lord, accept their affliction with patience, and declare: ‘Inna lillahe wa inna ilayhe rajeoon’ (To Allah we belong and to Him is our return).

Such is the act of wailing and lamenting when afflicted by a calamity hated in the Sight of Allah Subhanah, that the Messenger of Allah (saws) declared wailing as a tradition of the ‘days of ignorance’, and warned that one who wails at an affliction is ‘none of us’ (not a true believer)!

Women, women, women !

THE woman must do this, the woman must do that. She must cook the food, take care of children, and obey her husband at all costs! Does Islam really subjugate women like it is thought? Well the answer is plain and simple. NO! To think, some of us are getting too obsessed with women, and all our focus and criticism goes against them, but what about men? Without doubt there are many things that are upon the women that are in her benefit, however, there are just as many things upon men, but these are either ignored or just not talked about.

Firstly, we should understand that men and women are different and have different roles in Islam. Allah says in the Qur’an:

“And wish not for the things in which Allah has made some of you to excel others. For men there is reward for what they have earned, (and likewise) for women there is reward for what they have earned, and ask Allah of His Bounty. Surely, Allah is Ever All-Knower of everything.” (Qur’an, 4:32)

In Islam, men have many responsibilities to fulfill towards women. The man must earn, provide for, clothe and shelter his wife, and he is not allowed to take the money she owns. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that your wife has a right upon you (Al-Bukhari) and fulfilling this right is an indication of revering and fearing Allah. Man will be questioned if he fulfilled this duty. If he does not, then it is a clear act of disobedience to Allah and His Messenger.

So husbands, are we fulfilling our duty or are we disobeying our Lord?

Women play an important role towards the society. A mother who raises her children in accordance with the teachings of Islam is the backbone of society. Well-nurtured children are a basis for a strong community. Men should also play a part in the upbringing of the children. Yes, he has to go out and work, but there are 24 hours in a day and 168 hours in a week. I’m sure most of us are not so busy; if we prudently manage our time, we can make positive contribution in their upbringing. Here’s the question: How many men change nappies? How many men get up at night when the baby is crying? Very few I suppose.

How about dishes? When was the last time any of us men did the washing up? Why is it such a chore? After finishing dinner, what harm would it cause to pick up the plates and wash them? No instead, we eat to our fill, leave the plates where they are and take it for granted that our wives will do it. By helping around in washing dishes, changing nappies, and making our beds, our wives will only love us more.

The man also has a Hijab to observe. He must always lower his gaze. This is another aspect taken for granted. We have heard that we are not held to account for that one, unintentional, look. But some take it for granted to elongate it and make it ‘one long look.’ We must fear Allah and observe proper Hijab. Men should also dress modestly. His clothes must show piety and his Awrah must not be displayed.

We also ignore dressing up for our wives. Ask yourselves, when was the last time you looked your best for your wife? It is expected from her to look after the kids, make the dinner, clean the house and look good for us, but what about us? If the food is not cooked when we come home or we don’t like its taste, how do we react? Do we follow the Sunnah and keep silent without criticizing food?

We should follow the guidance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in all areas of our lives, and that includes within our households. Women are our partners. When no one listens to our problems, our wives do. Let’s start from today and make that change and surely the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) statement should be something for us to ponder on.

“The best of you are the best to their wives, and I am the best of you with my wives‚ – (Ibn Hibban)

Great things will come your way when you persist

and endure what seems possible. No, it's not easy,

but remember big achievements require time.

Be patient and don't give up, you can persevere and

you will succeed.

Fighting against despair will usually just serve to deepen and prolong it.

Instead of fighting against despair, overwhelm it with joy.

The best way to move away from something negative is to move toward something positive.

For every ounce of discouragement that comes your way, respond with a pound of positive, joyful living.

Rather than being overly concerned about what you're fighting against,

find yourself something to live for.

Put your time and energy in a positive, productive,

creative, life-affirming direction.

Imagine what would happen if you were disrespectful,

rude and insulting to another person,

and yet that person offered you nothing but kindness,

respect and gratitude in return. How long would you be able to

maintain such a negative approach?

Probably not very long, for your negativity would soon be overwhelmed

by the sincere kindness being returned to you. In the same way,

you can overwhelm the negativity that comes your way.

Respond to life with kindness, with joy, with positive,

productive action and enthusiasm.

Overwhelm the difficult world with goodness and joy.

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (saws) would recite this supplication more often than any other supplication.

Disease of ‘I will do it tomorrow’

LAZINESS is the lack of desire to act or work in general. Procrastination refers to postponing work and delaying it for future. Basically, procrastination is a result of one’s laziness.

Our greatest enemy, Satan, whispers a love for laziness and procrastination into us.

Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“During your sleep, Satan ties three knots at the back of your decks. He breathes the following into them, ‘The night is long so keep on sleeping.’ If the person wakes up and praises Allah, then one of the knots is unfastened. And if he performs ablution, the second knot is unfastened.

When he prays, all of the knots are unfastened. After that he will be energetic and happy in the morning. Otherwise he would get up listless and grouchy.” (Al-Bukhari)

Ibn Al-Jauzi, writing on this topic, said, “How many Jews or Christians have considered in their hearts love for Islam. But Iblees always hinders them. He says to them, ‘Do not be hasty. Look closely into the matter.’ And they postpone their conversion to Islam until they die as disbelievers. In the same way, sinners postpone their repentance. They set their sight on their desires and hope to repent later. But, as a poet said, “Do not rush to perform sins you would like to. Think about repentance beforehand.”

How many of us are determined to do something, yet we keep postponing it. A scholar may be determined to return to his study but Satan whispers to “rest for a while.” Or a servant is reminded of the night prayer and Satan says to him, “You have plenty of time.” He will not stop seducing people to love laziness and postponing of actions. Satan makes people rely solely on hopes and dreams.

This is how people are in the world. Some are prepared and alert and are not sorrowful when the angel of death comes. Others are deceived into procrastination and they despair when the time of death comes.” (Ibn Al-Jauzi, Talbees Iblees, p. 458)

Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, said:

“The perfect remedy for procrastination is to nurture sound faith in the manner of the Salaf As-Salih (pious predecessors). Before Islam, they had no sense of human achievement, but after being exposed to the powerful message of the Qur’an, their lives transformed completely. They became peak performers and high achievers. Whatever they touched was changed anew through their dynamic faith.

The remedy for fighting procrastination, therefore, is to nurture such dynamic faith.

Some of the tips that we can readily apply is rising early in the morning and developing a positive mind by counting the blessings of Allah and praying to Allah to bless the day with success. We must start our work right after Fajr prayers as the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed, “O Allah, bless my Ummah in their early morning endeavors.”

Last but not least, we should turn to Allah in supplication and seek His help in fighting this disease.

Convey from me even if it be one ayah

THE Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Convey from me even if one ayah (verse) for it may be that the one being informed will comprehend better that the one listening (at present)." (Al-Bukhari)

We learn from these words of wisdom that this Hadith encompasses the entire religion of Islam with respect to speech, belief and actions. Likewise, from the perspective of acting upon it with knowledge and from the perspective of calling towards it as much as one is able to. The Prophet (peace be upon him) implemented all of this – by speech, action, belief and giving Da'wah, i.e. his entire life was based on knowledge, acting on knowledge, and calling towards it.

Regarding this, Allah said: "Invite (mankind, O Muhammad, peace be upon him) to the way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Revelation and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path, and He is the Best Knower of those who are guided." (Qur'an, 16:125)

Da'wah was the mission of all Prophets, from the first to the last of them. All of them called people to Allah's religion. Their manhaj (methodology) was knowledge, implementation, application, and propagation. They called people by their speech and by their actions, because people are such that if you call them by speech which your actions contradict, they will not accept that Da'wah.

When you give Da`wah and your actions agree with what you are calling to, then people will accept the message.

Commentary:

The Messenger of Allah (saws) guided the believers to hasten and not delay the burial, without an absolutely genuine reason, of any deceased….for if the deceased was pious, it would be speeded towards goodness in its grave; and if the deceased was otherwise, a burden would be hastened away from mankind.

POLYGAMY Practice More Among Hindus than Muslims: The report of the 'Committee of The Status of Woman in Islam', published in 1975 mentions [Page Nos 66-67] that the percentage of polygamous marriages between the year 1951-1961 was; 5.06 among the Hindus while only 4.31% among the Muslims.

Polygamy

Question:

Why is a man allowed to marry more than one wife in Islam? Or why is polygamy allowed in Islam?

Answer:

1. Definition of Polygamy: Polygamy means a system of marriage whereby one person has more than one spouse. Polygamy can be of two types. One is polygyny where a man marries more than one woman, and the other is polyandry, where a woman marries more than one man. In Islam, limited polygyny is permitted and polyandry is completely prohibited. Now coming to the original question, why is a man allowed to have more than one wife?

2. Qur'an is the only religious scripture in the world that says 'marry only one': Qur'an is the only religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the phrase 'marry only one'. There is no other religious book that instructs men to have only one wife. In none of the religious scriptures like the Vedas, the Ramayan, the Mahabharat, the Geeta or the Bible does one find a restriction on the number of wives. According to these scriptures one can marry as many as one wishes. It was only later, that the Hindu priests and the Christian Church restricted the number of wives to one.

Many Hindu religious personalities, according to their scriptures, had multiple wives. King Dashrat, the father of Rama, had more than one wife. Krishna had several wives. In earlier times, Christian men were permitted as many wives as they wished, since the Bible puts no restriction on the number of wives. It was only a couple of centuries ago that the Church restricted the number of wives to one.

Polygyny is permitted in Judaism. According to Talmudic law, Abraham had 2 wives, and Solomon had hundreds of wives. The practice of polygyny continued till Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah. (960 A.D to 1030 A.D) issued an edict against it. The Jewish Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries continued the practice till as late as 1950, when an Act of the chief Rabbinate of Israel extended the ban on marrying more than one wife.

3. Hindus are more polygamous than Muslims: The report of the 'Committee of The Status of Woman in Islam', published in 1975 mentions on page numbers 66,67 that the percentage of polygamous marriages between the year 1951 -1961 was 5.06 among the Hindus and only 4.31 among the Muslims.

According to Indian law only Muslim men are permitted to have more than one wife. It is illegal for any non-Muslim in India to have more than one wife. Despite it being illegal, Hindus have more multiple wives as compared to the Muslim. One can imagine what would have been the percentage of polygamous marriages among the Hindus if the Indian government had made it legal for them. Earlier, there was no restriction even on Hindu men with respect to the number of wives allowed. It was only in 1954, when the Hindu Marriage Act was passed that it became illegal for a Hindu to have more than one wife. At present it is the Indian Law that restricts a Hindu man from having more than one wife and not the Hindu scriptures. Let us now analyse why Islam allows a man to have more than one wife.

4. Qur'an permits limited polygyny: As mentioned earlier, Qur'an is the only religious book on the face of the earth that says 'marry only one'. The context of this phrase is the following verse from Surah Nisa of the Glorious Qur'an: 'Marry woman of your choice in twos' threes' or fours' but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly, (with them), then only one' [Al-Qur'an 4:3]

Before the Qur'an was revealed, there was no upper limit for polygyny and many men had scores of wives, some even hundreds. Islam put an upper limit of four wives. Islam gives a man permission to marry two, three or four women, only on the condition that he deals with them justly. In the same chapter i.e. Surah Nisa verse 129 says: 'It is very difficult to be just and fair between women'. [Al-Qur'an (4:129)]

Therefore polygyny is not a rule but an exception. Many people are under the misconception that it is compulsory for a Muslim man to marry more than one wife.

Broadly, Islam has five categories of Do's and Dont's.

(i) 'Farz' i.e compulsory

(ii) 'Mustahab' i.e recommended or encouraged

(iii) 'Mubah' i.e permissible

(iv) 'Makruh' i.e 'not recommended' or discouraged

(v) 'Haram' i.e prohibited or forbidden

Polygyny falls in the middle category of things that are permissible. It cannot be said that a Muslim who has two, three or four wives is a better Muslim as compared to a Muslim who has only one wife.

5. Average life span of females is more than that of males: By nature males and females are born in approximately the same ratio. During paediatric age however, in childhood itself a female child has more immunity than a male child. A female child can fight the germs and diseases better than the male child. For this reason, there are more deaths among males as compared to the females during paediatric age.

During wars, there are more men killed as compared to women. More men die due to accidents and diseases than women. The average life span of females is more than that of males, and at any given time one finds more widows in the world than widowers.

6. India has more male population than female due to female foeticide and infanticide: India is one of the few countries, along with the other neighbouring countries, in which the female population is less than the male population. The reason lies in the high rate of female infanticide in India, and the fact that more than one million female foetuses are aborted every year in this country, after they are identified as females. If this evil practice is stopped, then India too will have more females as compared to males.

7. World female population is more than male population: In the USA, women outnumber men by 7.8 million. New York alone has one million more females as compared to the number of males, and of the male population of New York one-third are gays i.e sodomites. The USA as a whole has more than twenty-five million gays. This means that these people do not wish to marry women. Great Britain has four million more females as compared to males. Germany has five million more females as compared to males. Russia has nine million more females than males. God alone knows how many million more females there are in the whole world as compared to males.

8. Restricting each and every man to have only one wife is not practical: Even if every man got married to one woman, there would still be more than thirty million more females in USA who would not be able to get husbands (considering that America has twenty five million gays). There would be more than four million females in Great Britain 5 million females in Germany and nine million females in Russia alone who would not be able to find a husband.

Suppose my sister happens to be one of the unmarried women living in USA, or suppose your sister happens to be one of the unmarried women in USA. The only two options remaining for her are that she either marries a man who already has a wife or becomes public property. There is no other option. I have posed this question to hundreds of non-Muslims and all opted for the first. However a few smart people before accepting, said they would prefer their sisters to remain virgins. Biologically, it is not possible for an average man or a woman to remain celibate throughout life. It may be possible in exceptional cases of one in ten thousand. In the vast majority, the person either gets married or performs illicit sex or indulges in other sexual perversions. Sex hormones are released in the adult body every day. That is the reason why Islam has prohibited monasticism.

In Western society it is common for a man to have mistresses and/or multiple extra-marital affairs, in which case, the woman leads a disgraceful, unprotected life. The same society, however, cannot accept a man having more than one wife, in which women retain their honourable, dignified position in society and lead a protected life.

Thus the only two options before a woman who cannot find a husband is to marry a married man or to become public property. Islam prefers giving women the honourable position by permitting the first option and disallowing the second. There are several other reasons, why Islam has permitted limited polygyny, but it is mainly to protect the modesty of women.

If a man is allowed to have more than one wife, then why does Islam prohibit a woman from having more than one husband?

A lot of people, including some Muslims, question the logic of allowing Muslim men to have more than one spouse while denying the same 'right' to women.

Let me first state emphatically, that the foundation of an Islamic society is justice and equity. Allah has created men and women as equal, but with different capabilities and different responsibilities. Men and women are different, physiologically and psychologically. Their roles and responsibilities are different. Men and women are equal in Islam, but not identical.

Surah Nisa' Chapter 4 verses 22 to 24 gives the list of women with who you can not marry and it is further mentions in Surah Nisa' Chapter 4 verse 24 "Also (prohibited are) women already married"

The following points enumerate the reasons why polyandry is prohibited in Islam:

1. If a man has more than one wife, the parents of the children born of such marriages can easily be identified. The father as well as the mother can easily be identified. In case of a woman marrying more than one husband, only the mother of the children born of such marriages will be identified and not the father. Islam gives tremendous importance to the identification of both parents, mother and father. Psychologists tell us that children who do not know their parents, especially their father undergo severe mental trauma and disturbances. Often they have an unhappy childhood. It is for this reason that the children of prostitutes do not have a healthy childhood. If a child born of such wedlock is admitted in school, and when the mother is asked the name of the father, she would have to give two or more names! I am aware that recent advances in science have made it possible for both the mother and father to be identified with the help of genetic testing. Thus this point which was applicable for the past may not be applicable for the present.

2. Man is more polygamous by nature as compared to a woman.

3. Biologically, it is easier for a man to perform his duties as a husband despite having several wives. A woman, in a similar position, having several husbands, will not find it possible to perform her duties as a wife. A woman undergoes several psychological and behavioral changes due to different phases of the menstrual cycle.

4. A woman who has more than one husband will have several sexual partners at the same time and has a high chance of acquiring venereal or sexually transmitted diseases which can also be transmitted back to her husband even if all of them have no extra-marital sex. This is not the case in a man having more than one wife, and none of them having extra-marital sex.

The above reasons are those that one can easily identify. There are probably many more reasons why Allah, in His Infinite Wisdom, has prohibited polyandry.

WHY ISLAM WILL OVERWHELM

The state of our ummah as compared to other religious community is remarkably good in that our basic outlines are intact and the doctrine is still there. The prayers are prayed fives times in the mosque in congregations everywhere. Ramadan is loved and practiced by millions who choose to live as temporary ascetics and the Hajj is still the Hajj of old. The basic bedrock of the faith remains. This is the great miracle in this age that a religion born out of a time so utterly different, but does not make comprises whatsoever. Every other corrupted religion is making comprises giving into the pressures of this age. Just recently the Dalai Lama mentioned that maybe Buddhism isn't against homosexuality after all and how Christians seem to invent new forms of worship every year.

Our beautiful ummah is the last bastion of authentic monotheism and upright religion. And anybody from a different religious faith who really knows what religion is all about rather than just turning it into a woolly minded social service will have nothing but respect for us, s/he might disagree with us, but s/he knows that we still see things as they are.

If the world shouts down to us, we do not change. Aberration is not of us. We are the only one who continues to uphold a complete sacred beautiful vision of life amidst the shouting meaningless of late modernity and the shallowness of consumer, advising, nihilism that is the modern human condition and THAT IS WHY OUR SHIP IS GOING TO PULL THROUGH THESE STORMY WATERS. Everybody else (all forms of religions in the modern era) have given in and let too much water in and are now forced to aboard our ship sooner or later because we're all that's left. Only we have that radiant figure of the centre of our faith, a Prophet who is the perfect role model and an untainted revelation still accessible to the masses. All this should lead us to extraordinary gratefulness to Allah and give us hope despite this changing world in a time where everybody else has given up basically and gone with the secular preoccupation and priorities of the modern world, we continue to be on the straight path. This is the miracle!

Commentary:

The cloak of a true believer who sincerely fears Allah and the Last Day should be modesty and humility. If one gives up the wearing of elegant or expensive clothes (or indulging in extravagance and luxury) when one has the ability to do so, Allah Subhanah will bestow honor on such a believer in front of all creation on the Day of Resurrection.

But if he intends to do an evil act and has not done it, then Allah writes it down with Him as a full good deed, but if he intends it and has done it, Allah writes it down as one bad deed"’.

Commentary:

This is how the system of accounts works in the Presence of the Lord Most Gracious Infinitely Merciful:

1. If one merely intends to do a good deed, but does not or is unable to do it; The Lord Most Gracious records a full good deed in one’s ‘Book of Records’.

2. If one actually does the good deed intended, the Lord Most Gracious records the deed from ten to seven-hundred times.

3. If one intends to do an evil deed, nothing is recorded in one’s ‘Book of Records’.

4. If one intends to do an evil deed, and for the fear of Allah does not do it, a full good deed is recorded in one’s ‘Book of Records’.

5. If one does the evil deed intended, one evil deed is recorded.

Umm Habibah (r.a.) the mother of the believers, reported: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, "A house will be built in Jannah for every believer who offers twelve Rakah of optional prayer other than the obligatory prayer in a day and a night.''

Commentary:

If one makes it a practice to offer (at least) twelve extra rakahs in addition to the five obligatory prayers, the Messenger of Allah (saws) gave them the glad tiding of a house which would be built for them in Paradise.

The twelve extra (or Nafl) rakahs which the Prophet (saws) never failed to offer, and which are known as Sunnah Muaqqedah are:

1. Two rakahs before the ‘Fajr’ prayer.

2. Four rakahs before the ‘Dhuhr’ prayer and two rakahs after it.

3. Two rakahs after the ‘Magrib’ prayer.

4. Two rakahs after the ‘Isha’ prayer.

Commentary:

Allah Subhanah likes three things for mankind:

a. To worship Him Alone as He Alone deserves worship.

b. To not associate anything with Allah Subhanah in worship.

c. To hold fast to the Rope of Allah and not be divided.

Allah Subhanah absolutely disapproves of three things for mankind:

a. Irrelevant, casual, or vain talk or deeds which neither help oneself nor mankind.

b. Persistent questioning or hair-splitting in religion.

c. Extravagance or the squandering of wealth.

Our Hope is betwen our Tears

When trials come, as they do, what will the first words on our lips be? To Umm Zayed, the words of the Istirjaa prayer - to Allah we belong and to Him will we return - helped her to reconcile with a sudden and unexpected loss.

WE are taught that we should not ask for or seek out trials or difficulties in life. In fact, our Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed us to “Seek refuge with Allah from trials and tribulations, both visible and hidden” (Sahih Muslim). Yet, the virtues and rewards of observing patience in the face of adversity is highly extolled in our deen.

In the story of Umm Al-Momineen, Umm Salamah, she narrates the events following the death of her beloved husband, Abu Salamah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught her how best to respond to her trial, by teaching her the beautiful words of the Istirjaa.

She says:

“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘There is no Muslim who suffers a calamity and says what Allah has commanded: ‘Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raji’oon. Allahummaa ujurni fi musibati w’ukhluf li khayran minha’ (Truly! To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me for my calamity and compensate me with something better than that), but Allah will compensate him with something better.

“When Abu Salamah died, I said, ‘Who among the Muslims could be better than Abu Salamah, the first family to migrate to the Messenger of Allah?’ Then I said (this Du’a) and Allah compensated me with the Messenger of Allah.” (Sahih Muslim).

The inspiring narrative ends on a happy note where she is blessed with a new husband in the person of the Prophet (peace be upon him) – a prospect she could never have imagined. This was the result of her faith, her patience and her Du’a at the time of her loss.

One can feel the emotional turmoil Umm Salamah went through and reflecting on the power of Allah, and make a Du’a: “Oh Allah, don’t put me into any trial. But if and when you do, for You do as You will, according to Your Wisdom, then guide me to remember You when calamity strikes. Guide me to the Istirjaa. Give me the strength of faith and soundness of mind to pray to you for patience and better compensation at that critical moment.”

“Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil).” (Qur’an, 2:155)

Indeed whatever is destined for us, good or bad, will come to pass. Allah can test us and whenever this will happen, don’t forget to say:

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raajioon. Allah humma ujurni fi musibati wa ikhlufli khairun minha.”

Indeed, Allah will listen our Du’a. Indeed Allah will guide us. Allah is Most Loving and Most Merciful to His servants.

The scholars have said that if we are guided to patience and to the words of Istirjaa after a disaster hits us, we should thank Allah for this honour. The Qur’an tells us: “… Give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere” (Qur’an, 2:155).

Every traumatic periods are short-lived. We should remind ourselves of the special blessing of Allah on us at hard times.

Only Allah Who took care of us yesterday and will take

“O Allah, if and when you decide to try me again, guide my heart to more than patience. Guide me to the state of Ridha (pleasure in God’s decree and decision).” Ameen.

Rewards for reciting Qur’an

THE Qur’an, the final revelation of God to His last prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him), is the only Divine Book in its original state. It will continue to be so till the Day of Judgment as Allah has promised to guard it from corruption. This is because no new prophet will come and no new revelation will be sent. The Qur’an is the final revelation for the guidance of humanity till humans live on earth.

Below are some virtues of reading the Qur’an:

Intercessor

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Study the Qur’an (regularly) for it will act as an intercessor and intercede for its readers on the Day of Judgement. (Sahih Muslim)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “On the Day of Judgment the Qur’an will also be brought along with those who acted upon it in the world. But before it, Surah Al-Baqarah and Al-e-Imran will lead them and plead the cause of those persons who read these Surahs in this life. (Sahih Muslim)

Best among you

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: “The best among you are those who have learnt the Qur’an and teach to (others).”

Company of angels

Ayesha narrated that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “A person who recites the Qur’an and reads it fluently will be in the company of the obedient and noble angels, and he who reads the Qur’an haltingly and with difficulty will have a double recompense.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

In another Hadith, Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) said: Allah will elevate some nations through this book (the Qur’an ) and degrade others with it. (Sahih Muslim)

Reward for each letter

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that when somebody recites one letter from the Qur’an he will get one good deed in recompense and this one recompense will be equal to 10 good deeds. “I do not say that Alif Lam Meem is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter (i.e. it is equal to three letters). The Camel Given In Charity

I would like to share this short Story with you which was narrated to us by Dr. Saleh as-Saleh (May Allah Have Mercy upon him) in his room Understanding- islam1. You can listen to the audio The Camel Given In Charity
The Sheikh began:
"Do you want hear this real story which took place here about a hundred years ago. (In Saudi) Tayib. This is real! This is real!"
He continued:
"Bismilaahi Rahmaani Raheem. This story took place here about hundred years ago and it was also broadcasted on the radio stations. It is about a man call Ibn Jad'aan. He (Ibn Jad'aan) said how during Spring times he used to go out. He would see good and healthy fat camels and their udders filled to the extent of almost exploding. Whenever the little offspring (i.e. the calf) came close to the mother camel, her milk would pour forth because of the great abundance of blessings and abundance of goodness.
So I (Ibn Jad'aan) looked at one of my she camels with her calf and I remembered my poor neighbour who had seven young daughters. So I said to myself, by Allah I will give this camel and her calf as Sadaqah (charity) to my neighbour - and he recited the Ayah where Allah said in (Surah Al-imraan: 92):
"By no means Shall you Attain piety righteousness unless you spend in Allah's cause of which that you love"
And the most beloved from amongst my cattle, to me, is this she-camel. So I took her along with her calf and knocked on the door of my neighbour. I told him to accept it as a gift from me. I saw his face glooming with happiness and he was unable to utter anything in response.
So he benefitted from its milk and used to load wood on its back, awaiting for its offspring to grow up in order to sell them. Subsequently, he gained great good from this camel.
After the spring had passed, the dry summer came with its drought, and so the Bedouins began looking for water and grass. We gathered our belongings and left our places looking for water and the duhool (plural of duhul) or 'holes' in the earth, situated underground leading to water traps underneath the ground. Their openings are on top of the ground, as the Bedouins know of very well.
I (i.e. Ibn Jad'aan) entered into one of these holes so as to bring some water to drink...
Dr Saleh continued: "and his (Ibn Jad'aan's) three sons were waiting for him outside the hole. However he did not return. His three sons waited for him for one, two and three days and finally became hopeless.
They said maybe he was stung by a snake and died or he was lost under the earth and destroyed. They (and we seek refuge in Allah from this) waited for his destruction. Why? Due to greed in order to distribute his inheritance.
So they returned home and divided what he had left, amongst themselves. Then they remembered that their father (Ibn Jad'aan) gave a she-camel to their poor neighbour. They went to their neighbour and told him that it is better that he give them back the she-camel and take another camel in replace of it, otherwise they will take it by force and he will be left with nothing.
The neighbour complained that he would report them to their father. So they informed him that he had died. He inquired as to how and where Ibn Jad'aan had died, and why they hadn't told him. They then explained how he entered into one of these holes underground in the desert and did not come out.
The neighbour said: " By Allah take me to this place and take your she-camel and do whatever you do with it and I don't want your camel in return!"
They took him and when he saw the place, he went and brought a rope, lit a candle, tied it outside the duhul (the hole) and then stepped into it crawling on his back until he reached the places whereby he could crawl and roll. Eventually the smell of moisture became closer and then all of sudden he heard the sound of a man by the water groaning and moaning.
He went closer and closer towards this sound in the darkness putting his hand out all over until his hand fell onto the man (Ibn Jad'aan). He checked his breath and he was still breathing after one week! He pulled him out covering his eyes so as to protect him from the sunlight. He took with him some dates, moistened them in water and gave it to him to drink.
He then carried him on his back and took him to his house and life gradually return to this man whilst his sons didn't know. He then asked him: "Tell me, by Allah, one week while you were underground and you didn't die?!"
"I will tell you something strange..." Ibn Jidaan explained: "...when I went down there I got lost and waves took me from all directions and I said to myself I'd better stay close to this water that I have reached. So I started to drink from it, but hunger had no mercy and water does not suffice. Then after three days hunger intensified on me and took me from all parts. While I was lying on my back I surrendered myself to Allah and put all my affairs in his hands and all of the sudden I felt the warmth of milk pouring onto my mouth. So I sat in the midst of the darkness and I saw a pot coming closer to my mouth. I drank from it until I took from what is sufficient and then it would go! This occurred three times in the day but the last two days it stopped and I didn't know what happened."
His neighbour then informed him:
"If you know the reason you will be amazed! Your sons thought you had died and they came to me and took away the she-camel which Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta'Aala) was giving you from its milk!"
The Muslim is in the shade of his Sadaqah (Charity). Allah stated in (Surah At-Talaaq: 2,3): "...and whoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to him, he will make a way for him to get out (from every difficult)" and "...and he will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And who ever puts his trust in Allah, then he will suffice him".

The True meaning of Life is to Plant Trees under whose shade you do not Expect to Sit.

Guidance from The Prophet (saws)

Hadrat An-Nu'man bin Bashir (r.a.) reported: The Prophet (saws) said: "Verily, Du'a (supplication) is worship."
Ahadith No. 1465 quoted from Riyad-us-Saliheen Related by Abu Dawood.

Commentary:

What is a supplication but an expression of one's total and utter humbleness, helplessness, weakness, inferiority and lowliness before the Infinite Power and Might of Allah? Thus the Messenger of Allah (saws) described ‘dua’ or supplication as the very essence of worship (ibaadah) itself! The one who recognize their Lord remain constant in remembering and supplicating him; and the unfortunate ones who recognize not their Lord Creator and His Infinite Power and Might, erroneously assume themselves to be self-sufficient. Allah Subhanah loves those who constantly remember and supplicate Him and Him Alone for all their needs or wants.

UMAR (may Allah be pleased with him) became unconscious after he was stabbed, and it was said: “Nothing would wake him up except the call to prayer, if he is still alive.”

They said to him, “The prayer has finished, O Leader of the Believers!”

He woke up and said, “The prayer, by Allah! Verily, there is no share in Islam for whoever abandons the prayer.” He performed the prayer while his wound was bleeding.

The Great Companions (May Allah be pleased with Him), that is, the followers of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are those great personalities of the world, who are superior to and greater than anyone except the Prophets and Messengers of Allah (peace be upon him). By their achievements they earned the pleasure of Allah and His Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).

When we read the life histories of the Great Companions, we feel a longing to follow their example. We feel an urge to be from in our beliefs and to establish the faith of Islam. We believe that had not Allah created those wonderful people; our religion would not have come to us in its pristine from. Allah had caused those great Companions of our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) to safeguard our religion. Next to the lives of the Apostles of Allah (peace be upon him). It is the lives of these sages, which serve as the best models for us.

The manner in which the Great Companions went forward with the Islamic movement, the scarifies which they made in support of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), and the zeal and enthusiasm with which they worked for spreading the message of Islam, carry a good lesson for all human beings of the world, specially the Muslims.

For a long time now there has been a feeling that the life-stories of those torchbearers of Islam should be presented to our children and young persons, boys and girls, for correcting the ills of our present society.

This book is intended to fulfill this need and it is hoped that it will be of benefit to our young generation and shall impart especially to them desirable training on the Islamic way of life.

You will be happy that you read this all the way through!
As you got up this morning, I watched you, and hoped you would talk to me, even if it was just a few words, asking my opinion or thanking me for something good that happened in your life yesterday. But I noticed you were too busy, trying to find the right outfit to wear. When you ran around the house getting ready, I knew there would be a few minutes for you to stop and say hello, but you were too busy. At one point you had to wait, fifteen minutes with nothing to do except sit in a chair. Then I saw you spring to your feet. I thought you wanted to talk to me, but you ran to the phone and called a friend to get the latest gossip instead. I watched patiently all day long. With all your activities I guess you were too busy to say anything to me.
I noticed that before lunch you looked around, may be you felt embarrassed to talk to me, that is why you didn't bow your head. You glanced three or four tables over and you noticed some of your friends talking to me briefly before they ate, but you didn't. That's okay. There is still more time left, and I hope that you will talk to me yet. You went home and it seems as if you had lots of things to do. After a few of them were done, you turned on the TV. I don't know if you like TV or not, just about anything goes there and you spend lot of time each day in front of it not thinking about anything, just enjoying the show. I waited patiently again as you watched the TV and ate your meal, but again you didn't talk to me.
Bedtime I guess you felt too tired. After you said good night to your family you popped into bed and fell asleep in no time. That's okay because you may not realize that I am always there for you. I've got patience, more than you will ever know. I even want to teach you how to be patient with others as well.
I love you so much that I wait everyday for a nod, prayer or thought or a thankful part of your heart. It is hard to have a one-sided conversation. Well, you are getting up once again. And once again I will wait, with nothing but love for you. Hoping that today you will give me some time. Have a nice day!

Related by Bukhari and Muslim. Riyah-us-Saliheen hadith 1376

Commentary:

Knowledge and understanding of the ‘deen’ (religion) here stands for the understanding of the Qur'an and the Hadith, religious injunctions, and knowledge of the lawful and the unlawful. This narration highlights the excellence of knowledge and the fact that it is a sign of Allah's Help to the person who possesses it and acts upon it.

10 things to hand down to your daughter

* Knowledge of and love for Allah and the Deen. This is one of the most precious and enduring gifts you can pass down to your daughter, one that will benefit her in this life and the next.

* Memorization of the Qur’an. No matter how little you have memorized yourself, push your daughter to memorize as much she can. Encourage her and help her to revise. It will stand her in good stead in her life and will be a source of reward for you after your death as well.

* A good example of Muslim womanhood. Most girls look to their mothers for guidance. Embody the characteristics of a strong, faithful Muslimah and she will be inspired to follow your example.

* A sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Instill a sense of confidence in your child by encouraging her skills, talents and personality to develop. Make her feel secure in her identity and show her that she is loved and appreciated. This will have a positive impact on her future relationships and how she interacts with the world.

* A sense of modesty. Instill a love for Hijab in your daughter and encourage her to be modest, never boastful or conceited, in all areas of her life.

* Your language. If you speak Arabic, be sure to teach it to her so that she has the key to the understanding of the Qur’an. Also, if you have a mother tongue or speak a second language yourself, pass it on: a second or third language is always an asset, whether in study, work or social environment.

* A skill that you have. If you are an avid gardener, knitter or love painting, pass your skill onto your daughter. With so many ‘traditional’ skills being lost in today’s fast-paced world, you owe it to her to share your knowledge and pass it on to the next generation.

* Your favorite recipes. Yes, teach your daughter how to cook! Be it from a cookbook, an original recipe or passed down from your mother or even your grandmother, we all have our own trademark recipes: pass them on to your daughter and encourage her to develop some specialities of her own.

* Housekeeping skills. Instil good housekeeping habits in all your children and encourage them to take pride in a neat and tidy home. Pass any tricks or shortcuts on so that your daughter is well-equipped when she has a home of her own.

* Your family history. Give her a sense of her roots and heritage by sharing your family story with her. Acquaint her with her family tree and teach her the lessons learned by the different generations. Hopefully, she will do the same with her children, Insha Allah.

Guidance from The Prophet (saws)

Anas ibn Malik (r.a.) reported: The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "Eat Suhur (predawn meal). Surely, there is a blessing in Suhur.''
Related by Bukhari and Muslim.

Commentary:

To consume the ‘suhur’ (pre-dawn meal), even if it is only a small amount of food and/or drink, when one intends to observe a fast the next day is from amongst the extremely preferred Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws).

If one makes it a habit to skip or forego the ‘suhur’ or pre-dawn meal when observing fasts, although that by itself would not effect the validity of the fasts, the skipping of the ‘suhur’ would be against the guidance and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws).

Hadrat Abu Hurairah (r.a.) reported: The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "Whoever follows the funeral procession and offers the funeral prayer for it, will get a reward equal to one Qirat, and whoever attends it till burial, will get a reward equal to two Qirat.'' It was asked, "What are two Qirat?'' He (PBUH) replied, "Equal to two huge mountains.''
Related by Bukhari and Muslim.

Commentary:

The Messenger of Allah (saws) encouraged the believers to attend the burial of their believing brethren stating that one who follows the funeral and offers the prayer would get a reward as huge as a mountain….and if one follows the burial, offers the funeral prayer, and waits till the deceased is buried in the grave one would be entitled to earn a reward of two huge mountains.

If I found him to be careless concerning the prayer, I would leave him and say to myself that for things other than the prayer, he would be even more careless."

Hadrat Umar bin Al-Khattab (r.a.) reported: ‘The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "The deeds are considered by the intentions, and a person will get the reward according to his intention. So whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, his emigration will be for Allah and His Messenger; and whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration would be for what he emigrated for".
Related by Bukhari and Muslim.

Commentary:

The reward of each and every act depends entirely upon the intention which inspired the act. Thus only those deeds which are done with the sole intention to earn the Pleasure and Good Will of Allah Subhanah will be acceptable to the Lord Most Gracious…..but a deed, however noble it may seem, if done with the intention of anything else other than earning the Pleasure and Good Will of the Lord would not be eligible to earn any rewards in the Presence of the Lord on the Day of Judgment.
